Hi: I live in Canada Using Rogers Wireless. I own an iPhone 3GS which I plan to sell soon, as I want to jump onto the Android bandwagon asap. I've been trying to decide which phone to get, even considering buying a phone(and getting it unlocked) which supports 3G's frequencies where I live. I am trying to get a powerful Android phone, and have heard many good reviews about the Samsung Galaxy S (Galaxy S captivate coincidentally is coming to Rogers[my phone carrier in canada]. Should I buy the retail Galaxy S Captivate when it comes out in september for me, or is it worth waiting longer, for say, when more powerful handsets come out lateron?

Well, its definitely a great time to jump into Android, especially with the "super-phones" that are already released. I think Android is and has forever changed the landscape of the mobile device as we know it. Apple changed how we look and interact with a device and Android ran with that and made it something completely different with the open-sourced-ness (most likely not a word) of Google. The Galaxy S series from Samsung are nice enough, but I did own the Vibrant (T-Mobile's version) ans I wasn't completely sold. I am currently using a Nexus One and it is by far the best phone I have ever used. They're are a bunch of new devices coning out, so maybe you should wait and see if anything better comes, especially with the "dual-core" processors that will start hitting Android handsets Q4 of this year.

hm...well, from what I hear although the Captivate's battery life may not be the best out there, it is quite a solid phone. Ideally, buying a phone from my carrier would be best, and seeing how the only "powerful" android phone in my opinion (Rogers my carrier) has ever gotten was the Xperia X10, I feel like the galaxy S will be the next "powerful" handset they will be having for quite a while. Are the changes which come up in future android phones such as dual cpu, better gpu's etc big enough that it is worth waiting longer for? Also, will future operating systems such as gingerbread, honeycomb, be supported on the galaxy s?

With the dual-core processor, there are rumors that its gonna be pushing 1.5GHZ!! As for the battery life on the captive, its greatly improve from other phones because of the "power-sipping" super AMOLED screen. I'm personally waiting for the dual core phones to release, but if you believe that something is catching you eye, definitely go for it. Look for specs and don't hesitate to post any questions on here and we'll do our best to make sure you get a good phone.

Awesome--
So like I mentioned, I would be buying it retail since i'm not due for an upgrade for some time. I think the biggest problem is that I don't think my carrier will be getting anytime soon these dual core phones when they release ): so I would have to buy/unlock one online. With my iphone, I had a defective battery with my first one, and currently, the vibrate/silent switch has more or less broken. I handle my phones quite delicately but sometimes things happen just overtime, so I suppose that has always made me a bit nervous buying phones online. However I too am really excited for the dual core android phones. What differences/advantages would a dual core android phone have over say, a Galaxy S (single core) phone?

The speed of which it processes commands, such as jumping in and out of apps, also it will definitely be able to render and play games much more fluently and smoothly. I can just imagine the possibilities with the dual core. The nexus one shipped with the first ever 1ghz snapdragon processor and it completely changed the entire cell phone business, now if a phone doesn't have it, it's considered a slow POS. Also, Android 3.0 (Gingerbread) is said to perform better with a dual core, so not only is it gonna be a fast processor but down the line it's probably gonna be standard, like the original 1ghz is.

one of the biggest things for me is how future-proof the Galaxy S will be, seeing as I want it to last for some time. I need to understand how much of a performance increase I could be seeing between say a Galaxy S right now, and a future Dual core phone. Are these phones coming out in 2011?

Well, lets keep in mind that the technology that goes into these processors now might very well only be a temporary thing. When the Nexus One was announced and they said it was gonna have a 1ghz processor, people were floored! Now, if a company release a phone without it, those phones are considered "last-gen", nobody wants them. So once this dual core is being put into phones, I'm sure that a year might pass when Qualcomn announces that the next standard is gonna be a 2ghz, then the 1ghz and the 1.5 ghz dual core would be things of the past. I don't believe in a long term phone because they are just like computers, you buy one today and tomorrow its outdated. Do how I do, Carpe Diem, live for the moment when it comes to these phones because it might be cool today and an old POS tomorrow. So in shortest terms, you will never find a device that will be upgradable to all the new builds, requirements for Android 3.0 (Gingerbread) are out and basically 80% of current Android phones will not meet the requirements therefore hindering them obsolete.

Well, thank you for your advice. I think in september when the Galaxy S Captivate becomes available to my carrier, Ill buy it retail. In the future, I will upgrade when things such as dual cpu's etc become more common, but being my first android phone, I think the Galaxy S will be more then powerful enough. Again, thanks very much
