There a re a couple realy nice weather applications available for free from the Android Market, but i haven't used them enough to know whether it's possible to overlay them on the home screen.
I would imagine it might be an option in a future version.
I've installed all of the weather apps to check them out (Bit of a weather nut). The best ones to me are
The Weather Channel:
- Nice interface
- Cool Video feature
- Quality maps with a lot of features (although a little slow)
- Ability to save multiple locations
iMap Weather
- Ability to save multiple locations
- A little slow to update but a really great storm map and you can animate it
Weather bug
- Good interface
- Cool live picture from the location feature
- OK maps
None yet have the ability to put a widget on the desktop but that seems to be a current limitation of the OS. Only the default widgets seem to be available like the clock, search etc.

not true. I found this by error. if you hold down the icon from your program menu and drag it the side, till you land onto your main screen and drop the icon. this also works for moving it around on the screen.

I believe the OP is looking for screenlet style weather embedded into the desktop not just sticking an icon on the desktop.
you cant put a weather widget on the desktop yet, but there is a new update for early next year thats gonna practically revamp the UI, so that may be a possibility. the new update features video capture and other new features.
