I placed a call to my home phone and when I hung up, the G1 suddenly buzzed and I was staring at the T-mobile G1 boot up screen. Whoa! I have never had this happen before. I just got the R30 OTA this morning. Anyone else seen this?

By any chance did you hold the call end button for too long?

No I didn't but that doesn't seem to reboot the phone when I tried it. It just brings up the Phone options dialog.

Is holding the end call button down supposed to reboot the phone?

I have had a reboot twice in the middle of a phone call. Once with R19 and once with R30. That is incredibly poor software quality. The phone functionality is a critical piece of the software. To have it rebooting during calls is unacceptable. Imagine if you were calling the fire department!

Currently my phone is stuck with a "Sorry! Activity Phone is not responding" dialog. This happened when a phone call came in. The phone rang once and crashed. I cannot reboot the phone or shut it down. The buttons on the dialog are non-responsive. It is completely locked up. I am unable to find a key sequence to reboot the phone.

So far I am unimpressed with the quality of the software.

I ended up having to remove the battery to get the phone to restart. It appears that all my notes and contacts are saved across that hard reboot.

I have had this happen to me twice as well. It seems the radio (separate processor) is resetting itself which then forces the primary OS to need to reset.

I have so many issues with my G1 that I sort of put it on the back burner. I have the luxury of using it just for web browsing and some of the cool apps while I use a second phone as my primary communications device.

I really wanted the G1 to be all it promised and I think the OS might have an interesting future, but this level of stability should never have been shipped. This is a Google Alpha release and since phones are used for dialing 911 etc, I think it is reprehensible that it was sold in this shape.

Hate to say it since I am a huge open source fan but this is really in crappy shape.

I have a friend with a G1 and his is constantly resetting during phone calls. He works with a number of other folks who have G1 devices and none of them are having the same issues he is so TMO is giving him a new phone in case he has a flaky board in the device. Could be a weak solder joint that shorts when the device heats up. When you are on the phone, the radio is really active so it can heat up (I notice my G1 gets hot a lot when doing a lot of web surfing). So you could have a hardware problem. I'll admit it is unlikely but worth trying a second device if you can get TMO to exchange it for you.

It's easy to cut the G1 a lot of slack, as a lot of the little issues/faults can be put down to teething problems on the new Android platform. But i think if these issues get to the point where they're happening on a regular basis it might be time to do something about it.

It might be worth giving T-Mobile CS a quick call, im sure they'll be aware of the problem and will be able to tell by the frequency of it happening whether you've been unlucky enough to receive a defective handset - and then sort you a replacement.

I took my phone to the T-Mobile store and explained the rebooting problem to the rep. He initially suggested that I "download the update" from the T-Mobile site (?!) When I informed him I was running the latest (RC30) software, he courteously placed a call to the normal T-Mobile support number and handed me the phone.
[WAIT]
I recounted the rebooting issue to the phone rep who then transferred me to G1 specific support.
[WAIT]
After a 3rd recounting of the story, I asked for a replacement. Actually I insisted since I had burned through 40 minutes to get to that point.

They charged me $9.95 UPS (LAME) shipping and the replacement phone should arrive in 5-7 days. I have to send the (hopefully) defective one back within 7 days.
