I would first check which service is best in your area. After you pick one, I would look into which phone you want.

Desire anyday mate! It is fast, good battery life, Huge screen, good camera, any ther reason why? by ther way I had the galaxy s for a few days (returned it) and it was laggy, very poor battery life, and for a 5 mega pixel camera, the pictures are not as sharp as on the Desire, (tested on PC and the phone)
hope this helps! good luck!

I would have to aggre here I also think the desire is a much better device compared to the samsung but I am also a HTC fan.
They both have good and bad points, if you want to game lots on it then I am afraid I would have to say the Galaxy S purly because of the Hummingbird prosessor in it compared to the Snapdragon in the Desire. They are both 1gig prossesor chips but the Hummingbird handles 3d rendoring faster but tends to strugle a little with the day to day grind of general use.

I'd pick a Galaxy S device any day over my Nexus One (and since i have 3 galaxy S devices in my possession and a nexus one, I feel fairly qualified to make that decision :P )

The screen on the Galaxy S phones is 4in compared to the Desire/Nexus One 3.7 inches.
I wouldn't of thought that I'd notice the extra .3 inches, but believe me, any time I go back to my N1 i definitely miss it.
Add in the Super AMOLED screen is absolutely GORGEOUS, and the incredibly fast GPU on this thing, and you've got a winner in my book.

not exacly a winner if you want very good battery life! I used to get (broke my Desire) 3 days with heavy use (internet, movies gaming etc..).
For the first few days my galaxy s was nowhere near that! Go to bed and plug the phone in.. Not my king of thing, but then again nothing will ever beat my rather amazing nokia 5800! 6 days (just don't use it much :P) god I miss my Desire!
