There is an application which is built for this...

The Free MIQ app from Best Buy is built to solve this problem. All you do is download the app on your windows mobile phone. It then backs up all your contacts, sms, calender, photos ect. When you get your Android (Sweet!) you just download the app and log into your account, all your data will then automatically load on your phone. No plugging in, no messing with versions of active sync and gmail, very simple...

This is what I used and it was by far the easiest way to transfer phones and backup all my data.
