Has anybody else had the dialer app lock up on them? My G1 was basically trouble free, with this exception. Some of the symptoms I had:
  • Dialer says it's starting the call and then just stalls, without ever progressing from there.
  • Call connects, but dialer is otherwise unresponsive. Tab for the dialpad never shows, so I cannot navigate touch-tone systems.
  • Similar to the last issue, call connect, but people on the other end cannot hear me talk.
  • On an incomming call, I cannot actually pick up the line.

In all of these cases, I get a dialog box telling me that the dialer app is not responsive and asking if I want to force it to close. Afterwards, I get the same message again every time I try to run the dialer app, and the phone indicates I have no service in the status bar. The phone works properly after I shut it off completely and turn it back on.

Has anybody else had this problem? I've already returned my G1, with the intention of getting one again later after some of the bugs are ironed out. But, this problem probably won't be fixed if it is never acknowledged.

So out of the 66 people who have viewed this thread, nobody else has ever had this happen to them?

I have had a lot of applications become non responsive and gotten the "NNN app is not responsive". The dialer has blown out a few times. I have not had the problem where the called party cannot hear me but I have had complaints of the sound quality being very poor. I have tried the headset as well but people have complained that I sound tinny.

I really like the concept of the G1 and bought mine the day it came out but it is really really buggy! I am trying to hold on to see if it improves. At the moment, I am carrying a second phone just in case as I cannot depend on the G1 yet.

Thanks for your feedback. I've heard from one other person having this problem too, so at least it is clear that it's not an isolated incident (which is what I wanted to figure out). This does bother me a bit though. I like the G1 and the Android platform, but it is never going to take off if it becomes known as a buggy and unstable system.

I honestly have a hard time not finding bugs in this thing. I had a conference call going with two friends and tried to add a third and it hang up instantly. Every single time. it is supposed to handle up to six calls and I am just trying for three.

I am going to hang on until my return period wears out. I really want this to work.

Same here

I do find it strange that this seems to be a systemic problem, yet it hasn't been plastered all over the front pages of electronics news sites.

Well I found out the answer to one of my mysteries. I wrote "I had a conference call going with two friends and tried to add a third and it hang up instantly. Every single time. it is supposed to handle up to six calls and I am just trying for three."

This is not an Android bug. I found out that T-mobile restricted all their handsets to just two calls in conference. They used to allow up to 6. I verified this by putting my SIM in my old sidekick which I know could do up to 6 calls on a conference and suddenly it can only do 2 as well. So this was a change in the network, not an Android bug. The fact that it fails without telling you why is frustrating but again, that is a network issue. Lame.

Probably nobody cares about this but I hate seeing post on forums that say something is a bug when it isn't.

Glad you figured it out, thanks for sharing. I actually think that's really interesting.

I also think that things like that should be handled more gracefully. Even if the provider sucks, if an operating system crashes, it's a bug.

I can confirm this problem with the dialer. It's happened to me a handful of times - the dialer will freeze or present me with the wait-or-force-close message. I've had no trouble picking up calls or any issues during calls. Most of the time the dialer works just fine, but every once in a while it hangs.

I expect to see some bugs, this is after all a 1st gen phone, but not in the dialer. It's a phone. If it can't dial properly nothing else really matters.

Any idea if there is some correlation with the wifi being connected? It occurred to me that the problem always seemed to be either at work or home, two places where the phone may have been hooked up to wifi.
