I'm sure you know there is a long and painful way of getting Root after the RC30 update. If you can get into the debugging mess and come out with something useful, you have me out-geeked for sure (meant as a compliment). Outside of su, sudo and gksudo, followed by some very basic commands, I don't have a clue what to do with root. I'd bet dollars to donuts that you can guess exactly where I'm coming from. Dmsg? BTW, OS of the computer seems to be irrelevant with this issue.
I did have an issue with the stock cable permitting charging but not mounting before it started happening with all cables, so I can't be too certain that it isn't a hardware issue. It's just that it's happening to people at the same time, but not everyone who has been updated.
Removing apps and rebooting....
May grab an adapter, back up photos, and start from scratch, as factory reset hasn't worked and my patience is fading.

Reformatting or replacing the SD card doesn't help, but I got this demsg output:
[106900.767424] usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 92
[106901.174827] usb 2-2: device not accepting address 92, error -62

That's from me just plugging it in and unplugging it

Was that the log messages from the phone or a linux pc you plugged it into? Because I don't get any output on a linux pc, as if the phone is never plugged in to it. And I forgot to bring my usb cable to work, so i'll check dmsg on the phone later tonight.
Glad you tried reformatting the SD card. I can cross that off the list of things that could cause this. So it seems it's down to the update or one of the installed apps, unless someone can think of another cause.
Grats on the phone, and this time don't install any apps before you do the update. See if you still get the problem. I had replaced my first phone because of a faulty battery, and I had the same problem on both. Before the update, got the USB notification, but not after. Although it still could be one of the apps, as I've tried pretty much the same ones on both phones.

I'm not sure I would cross the formatting off, because from what I've read, it's worked for some people. The dmesg errors came after the reformat, but I didn't check for them before formatting the card. They came from my laptop.
The T-mo rep I spoke to had no interest in the errors. I offered them like, 5 times. They had me boot into Windows, and when Windows said there was a USB device but it could not be recognized, and that there must be something wrong with it, we were done troubleshooting. They said I needed a new phone.
So, I'm still not totally convinced that it's a hardware issue, as they are assuming. He asked me more than once if there was any physical or water damage, which there isn't.
A few good things came of this. After the factory reset, I went to the Market to download all of my favorite apps, and found one I hadn't seen before called MyBackup, which allows you to save a few extra things from the phone in case of a reset. I wish I could back up ALL of my settings, like what icons/photos I have on my homescreens, etc. Probably a piece of cake with root access.
I got a 4 GB micro SD with an adapter for $20 at Walmart, so I won't have to swap out videos so often. I've learned a little more about the G1, and can take that into account when I decide if I want the modified release with root access. I just might. If not, I'll do the update without installing apps, as you had mentioned.
T-mo pays for return shipping, so the new phone costs $10... unless they decide to find non-warranty damage, in which case they'll charge me $100. I've treated this thing so well that a charge like that could send me looking for a new provider. So far, I'm ok with how they've handled it, but I think there's a chance they are wasting a phone. They will probably send me a refurbished one.

Good luck on your new phone. Hope you never get the problem.
Also, if you install the "Terminal" app on your new phone, see if you get these lines when you do a
$ cat /proc/last_kmsg
hsusb: IDLE -> ONLINE
usb: notify offline
hsusb: ONLINE -> OFFLINE
Since I don't have root, I can't look at live system messages (/proc/kmsg is not accessible, and I don't know where messages.log is). So I don't know if the G1 USB driver is doing the right thing when the cable is plugged in.
I wish I can find a development forum I can discuss this in.

Will do. There is a dev forum. I can't remember where it is though. Google should get you there.

Ok, I bought a 2GB SD card that came pre-formatted FAT16. I plugged it into the phone and it seems to work fine. I was even able to install .apk files from it, which for some reason I couldn't do on my original SD card.
But the USB problem remains. Plugging in the cable to a PC gives no notifications from the PC side or the phone side, but the phone starts charging. I'll reformat the original card and report back.

Phogster - if you find out that it won't work, and t-mo will replace it, think carefully about how important it is to you to have the USB capability. I returned my almost perfecty functional, single-owner G1, and got in return a beat-up piece of garbage that seems like it was owned by a 12-year-old on drugs. Not too happy. They are replacing it, but I have been warned at least five times that I could be charged an out-of warranty fee on either phone.
This would be enough to make me leave T-Mobile, as I treated both like gold. For now, I have a creaking screen that rattles like tin cans dragging from a "just married" jalopy every time I get a call on vibrate. The left half of the keyboard is mashed down so hard that light shoots out over the keys. It took 4 phone calls to get this one replaced, and I was greeted with suspicion and a bit of contempt despite being a patient customer for the last 4.5 years.
So beware. Regardless of their apparently acute observation of, and charging for, incoming returned phones, the ones going back out the door are sent out willy-nilly; apparently the the same returns, without repair. They ship you the phone--no battery, back cover, or anything else... just the phone, sitting very loosely in between two pieces of foam. It bounces around the box, all the way from Georgia.
I want my old G1 back. Screw the USB transfers. I have a micro card reader now. The old phone was solid, well-built, and gave me a satisfying buzz. This one is like a box of broken stuff. And they tell me the creaking screen is a "recognized issue" now. So, those of us who didn't have that problem from the start were lucky. I guess the results of treating a phone like trash are so widespread that they are currently researching it, and no longer replace them for that reason alone--even if they sent it to you that way.
Still not sure the USB problem was a hardware issue.
Frustrated and regretful...
EDIT: I forgot to mention that they made a big hoo-haa about sending me this second phone without charging me for shipping. Like I'm supposed to feel lucky... When he was leading up to it, I thought he was going to give me two free months of service or something... he built up their generosity so much. Free shipping? That's a given.

Sorry to hear that Foss. Yeah, I pretty much ruled out hardware, so I wasn't about to ask for a replacement. I'd suggest you go to a t-mo store. You just might find someone nice enough to give a new one. That's what happened to me at Wal-Mart. I complained about the battery, and they gave me a new one still sealed in a box.
Is it snowing on this page?
