Here's a recent interview with Google CEO Eric Shmidt, definitely worth a read.

Some highlight quotes:

Quote:
Is Google´s mobile initiative android the right answer to enter the market? Marco Börries from Yahoo said, android is just Windows Mobile on Linux.

This comparison is not correct. Marco should know better. He is very clever and he understands what Linux is. Android is a development interface that is different from others. It is a development platform for java-based applications for mobile phones, it has nothing to do with Microsoft, it is free, and modifying is easy. That is the bet. But it is not shipped yet. We can't say how well it is going because it is still in development.

Search marketing works very well. But where is the growth potential for Google? Mobile Internet, video, web 2.0?

First: There is still a lot of revenue in search - as we get the technology better or as we can do more targeted ads. There is no limit for search marketing. People assume that there is a limit, but we have many more ideas about technology. Second: The most obvious large space of advertising is the mobile internet. Every German has a mobile phone. Just take the success of the iPhone: It has the first really powerful web browser on a mobile device - and many more are still coming. Nokia has one coming, Blackberry has one and Motorola has one. They are all supposed to be released this year. By these products, the advertising gets more targeted because phones are personal. So targeted ads are possible. And that means the value of the ads will grow. The next big wave in advertising is the mobile internet.

Completely agree, mobile advertising is going to be huuuge.

Take the recent Android presentation at I/O for example, the internal compass/movement sensor. In an ideal world advertisers want to throw up messages and signs as you walk down the street... and Google will most certainly help them to achieve this.

Well google better be paying for my data service plan, as I will upon getting my first unsolicited ad, be sending a bill to google and the advertiser then I will start my law suites on theft of service. Of course if this is properly outlined in the service agreement then I just will not have the service to start with, I sure as hell don't need a mobile phone, much less be paying to carry a private billboard. Only a fool would, shame that we have a lot of young fools in america these days.

I would respectfully point out that much of the great content we enjoy (online, on the mobile web, and through mobile applications) is, at least partially, if not wholly, subsidized by advertising revenue (or the promise of it). Part of consumers' 'payment' is the willingness to view advertising, otherwise, we'd have to pay for the content and likely a higher premium for the use of mobile internet.
