...hey folks, i'm new to these android phones so this may come accross as a silly question but do i need unlimited internet access with them to run? for things like the weather app and such likes?

Well you do need the Android internet in order to run an android device. I think that plan is unlimited. I'll pose you this question, why wouldn't you want the unlimited data on an android phone? If you don't get it you'll be missing out on the awesome web surfing, android market and all the apps.

cos the deal i was looking at was 500mb in the package but thought that wouldn't have been enough
