InformationWeek have published a write-up on the recent speculation that T-Mobile have burned through some 1.5Million G1 pre-orders.

Quote:
Poll your non-tech friends. Have they even heard of the G1 and the Android platform? There's surely some mainstream interest, but there's no way the buzz is as big or bigger than it was for the iPhone 3G. By comparison, the iPhone 3G sold 1 million units in its launch weekend in more than 20 countries (with about 500,000 to 700,000 sold in the United States). Additionally, the G1 can only be preordered in the United States by existing T-Mobile customers.

i think the point thats missed is t-mo does not want a sell out. they ordered 1.5 million but there not going to have that many at launch. there going to have a few hundred thousand for preorders, then a few hundred thousand for welkins and new subscribers. and then a few hundred thousand to trickle in over the next few months.

I didnt read any thing that stated that they sold 1.5 million pre orders, but that they orderd 1.5 million from htc. its going to take months to fill that order.

The 1.5 million figure first appeared in Motley Fool. They did not provide a source for this info. T-Mobile has not issued a statement regarding the number of G1's that have been sold. Based on hearsay via Motley Fool, this number has been widely circulated. It's a speculative figure at best.

I can't this figure has been so widely circulated. I remember reading the original article like benji said from Motley Fool.

It was purely a guestimate based on very little, im surprised many media outlets quotes it.

Still, the free hype and exposure for Google is all good, just dont be disappointed when the official numbers fall short.

I reckon it's more likely 200,000-300,000

think WalkingDead got it right. The 1.5 million is just how many TMobile has purchased. They want to ensure that there is no chance of selling out; and that will be all the way through the holiday season I'm sure. One of the bigger backlashes were all the people lined up for an iphone and then there still not being enough.

I guess the same could be said for the Wii launch.

It's all speculation at this point, until T-Mobile actually states something -- as of now, they haven't.
