Android: Searching the Address Book

I'm contemplating to switch my Palm Treo for an HTC Hero. One usability question bugs me now. The treo has a nice, time and keystroke-saving search facility: Just type the 1st letter of the first name and and a couple of letters of the family name to jump to the right entry.

Example:
typing 'mba' -> jumps to the Markus Baertschi entry.

On other phones i'd have to type 'baertschi m' to have the same effect.

What's about Android ?

Might be a bit late to reply but my hero does the same thing when searching contacts-ie only need to type one letter and it produces a selection of contacts which becomes more defined with the more letters you type-this also works when predictig general text
