Noob question ref Networks

Hi,

I am liking the look of Android on the HTC Hero and contemplation buying one sim free.

I see that currently Android phones are only on some networks -
Are the fully compatible with ALL networks?

I am currently on O2 UK with another 9 months left on my contract so want something that works now and will work if I change network later on.
