Since this morning, I've had a dozen applications running. How do I switch between them and stop the ones I no longer want running?

I see them in the upper part of the screen, but I can't just click on them or click the little "x" and kill the windows like on the computer. How do I do this?

those aren't running programs. Those are notifications. If you pull down that notification shade and click the "clear notifications" button, those icons will go away.

also, take a look at this, it's the manual for the phone. Sounds like you may not have one.

it will only run 6 apps at a time, the only way to close them all down is to shut down and restart the phone

To switch between apps, hold down the home button for a few seconds, just like ctrl:tab on a pc
