I do not ever read manuals, so my fault if it's in there, and I'm just wasting your time; but hopefully not
I have quickly got into the habit of putting the phone into sleep mode when not in use. I never ever let the phone (G1) do the action itself. This so happens to be a problem while on the phone, since to enter sleep mode on the G1 you press the red End Call/Power button.
Since I am very popular (just kidding...), I text while talking on the phone, and my little ritual I do for texting is type, enter key, close screen, wait for the orientation to change, then press the sleep button. I will do this while on the phone, and it is extremely annoying. I have an odd philosophy that I tell everyone when they have a "what if" statement:
don't do it. Now wouldn't it be backwards if I do not apply that to myself? Just don't hit the button.
I do that, about 80% of the time
But maybe other G1 users have run into the same annoyance, so here's a resolution that would be cool to see in cupcake:
While using the phone, pressing the red End Call/Power button should prompt an option box up, with one option allowing you to select to put the phone to sleep, and the other one to end the call. May seem kinda crazy, but it would totally solve that problem, instead of accidentally ending the other call.
Thank you for reading my crazy story/opinion. Can't wait to hear from everyone!
Cheers,
