Hi,
Over in Singapore, a local telco Singtel just launched the Dream a few days ago and I picked one up when I was there over the weekend. I brought it back to Malaysia (a neighbouring country just north of Singapore) and popped my SIM card into the unit. I can connect to my telco and make normal phone calls and text messages, but the phone does not seem to be able to detect my data connections (3G / GPRS). Wi-Fi connections are fine but that's rather limiting.
What I wanted to ask is, is this a symptom of the phone being telco-locked? I kinda doubt that 'cos if it was locked I shouldn't be able to connect to any external telcos bar Singtel. I do have a valid 3G subscription on my current SIM card which I can verify using my older phones. The Dream itself doesn't seem to have any 3G setup screens, from what I can see.
The top bar of the Home screen indicates that signal strength is maxed out. But I know that when I used my friend's Singtel SIM card, I could see a 3G connected status icon next to the signal strength icon. I don't see that when I switch to my local telco's SIM card.
Anybody can provide clues on how to set up my phone to use 3G? Or is this indication of a locked unit?
Thanks,
Wong
