I have managed to get the G1 to download emails from my Hotmail account (something that a lot of people are having trouble doing I understand). I have been informed that these settings will work in the UK and most of Europe but I cant verify if it works elsewhere. Maybe you will have to set your locale on the hotmail webpage to UK to get it working.

Anyway here are the POP3 and SMTP settings for hotmail using the email app supplied on the device. I have tried and been able to read from my hotmail account.

POP server: pop3.live.com
Authentication type: SSL
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live

SMTP server: smtp.live.com
Autentication type: use TLS

edit: these settings now work when forwarding mail to your gmail account

I think something has happened at Hotmail.

I am in the UK. I just entered my Hotmail email address and password into the setup email page on my G1. I clicked on Next and my Hotmail account was set up automatically without any requirement to manually add POP server, Authentication type or anything else.

My emails are downloading perfectly.

I tried this here in the U.S. and it will not work. Tells me that it cannot log into the POP server.

It could be limited to Europe, has anyone tried going to the hotmail settings using a web page and set your home location to the UK and tried again?

Just as an FYI for everyone, I used the settings and it worked a treat. I'm in Australia.

Cheers for the info.
