How do you think T-Mobile/Google will handle firmware updates for older Android phones in years to come?

We're all hoping that the Android platform will be around for years to come, and say it does.

Will there be a cutoff point for older phones?

Will there be a blanket update for all Android devices or can we expect to see individual updates for each model? - After all every phone will have different hardware/capacity/features.

Obviously the Android platform is in constant development but will the G1 still Android updates even when there's 10's of newer Android handsets on the market?

What do you guys think?

well, just like everything else, they can only push out updates for older models for so long, then unfortunately they have to ditch them and work on bigger and better things. perfect example in microsoft with the xbox and xbox360, when the 360 came out they were making games for both systems and just last year they completelt stopped production on software and accesories for the first xbox. for android phones is no different. atleast lets hope that google and tmobile have enough sence to realize that we're not rich people and cant afford to be buying new models of the g (g1,g2,g3. etc.) every 5 months and make updated for the older models to keep them running top notch .

I imagine, android being open source and all, that the developer community will keep unofficial updates coming out. That would be one possibility at least.

Yeah you're right, that could definitely be an option.

I guess it could also pose an issue for application developers and backward capabilities, but again this is all a looooong way off yet.

I would imagine it would run much like any other product. Android will eventually have "Android 2010" or "Android V.2" or simply "Android II" just like everything else, and support for the older versions will dwindle.
