Finally, some solid confirmation hinting the official release date for RC31 (Cupcake). This isn't a huge article, but damnit, its juicy!

"T-Mobile G1 Getting "Cupcake" OS Update, May Be Targeted For Late January"

The word *may* is their get-out clause in case it doesn't happen on time

I saw this story over the weekend, and i just cant help but think it's a load of nonsense... am i being too skeptical?

Here's the information that apparently came from a discussion with a "G1 PDA Specialist"
Quote:
FACT - There WILL be a G1 update shortly as it was INTENDED to be by mid-January so the next target is now by the end of January.

FACT - T-Mobile will not just provide Cupcake elements to the G2 and leave the G1 behind.

FACT - The next update will be called RC31 and include Cupcake elements.

FACT - The mass of calls lately for Cupcake is registering and causing T-Mobile to double their efforts in getting the update out.

FACT - NO ONE has received RC31 as of today.

FACT - When the update is released it will be done in stages “Over The Air” but it will be by region not when you purchased the G1.

FACT - The memo I was privy to is NOT distributed to Support personnel.

FACT - T-Mobile Specialists & Support are LAST to know when an update happens and are notified AFTER it is released as was the case with RC29 & RC30.

FACT - T-Mobile does have a battery improvement program in motion

FACT - T-Mobile’s plan for battery improvement will be one of OR a combination of efficiencies in an OTA update and an extended life battery replacement.
All those facts just strike me as common sense.. anyone who's been tracking the Android platform and the G1 could have made these predictions..

Very surprised that this news gained so much traction - i guess it's a testament to how badly G1 owners want the update i guess.

I'm sure you can since the update says that the onscreen keyboard will come up anytime you go into an "edit" box (typing).

oh yeah! an onscreen virtual keyboard is extremely convenient. i hope it works well because the screen is a little narrow, we'll see soon!

Ya I was thinking that too...but as it looks my biggest question, is the keyboard going to be too tall in order to make the keys big enough to be usable...because if the keys are big then you wont really be able to use it for web browsing.

that is one of my issues with virtual keyboards, the keys are never big enough, even when they take up more than 50% of the screen.

what would be perfect, in my opinion, is if the virtual keyboard had your choice of input, QWERTY or PhonePad (like a dialer) and had predictive text. I think the phonepad would actually be easier to use because the keys could be bigger without taking up a lot of space.
