So, we all know that youtube vids look terrible, anyways, I saw vids on other htc handsets such as the htc touch diamond and htc touch, and they looked fantastic. Not only fantastic, but advanced fantastic! The vids looked as good as they would on a tv, extremely clear and very detailed. This brings up my point/question, why are youtube vids terrible looking on the g1 and how can I make them look slightly better, maybe even as good as on the other htc handsets?

Yup completely agree about the HTC touch clarity. I own a Touch Diamond and the videos are excellent quality.

I haven't managed to get near that kind of quality on the G1, but have found the picture to be improved when using Wi-Fi rather than 3G.

I don't have 3g where I'm at, but I spoke to a Tmobile rep and I was told that vids look much better on 3g. I hope we get 3g in Cleveland soon!!

It is correct that viewing video on youtube via wireless will give you much better quality than over 3G or lower. This is because the server will negotiate your connection type to attempt to serve video quicker, which unfortunately looses quality on the way. Loss of video quality also occurs when the server transcodes the video for the recipients capable resolutions, so far the G1 isn't very good at dealing with multiple resolutions and therefore forces the sending server to give it the required resolution.

The way that data is sent from youtube to the G1 is via RTSP, this protocol allows for drops in quality if the connection speed drops below a certain threshold. The idea is that video quality is less important than constant delivery.

That is why wireless has better quality than 3G or lower, but doesnt explain why other devices that are on 3G have better video quality. I can only assume that the other devices arent forcing YouTube to transcode while the G1 is.
