I want to use the G1 as a way to access my company's computer and networks remotely and not to carry a laptop. However, I need to maintain firewall security and utilize some type of Virtual Tunneling. I haven't found any mention of software to provide a secure connection.

Then, once I have a secure connection, I need to access my computers through a telnet or putty application running on the G1.

Any help? <--Firewall

I'm not an expert on this but it sounds like a VPN client would cover your needs just fine. Sadly there's yet to be one released on the Market.

As with a lot of questions about apps and stuff, it always tends to be the same answer - 'it'll happen sooner or later'

I'm not sure if you're a coder or not, but this security-suite for developers could help you to build one if you are:

http://www.mocana.com/NanoPhone-Android.html
  • A secure browser
  • Virtual Private Network clients to secure data communications between the device and corporate network
  • FIPS validated crypto
  • Malware and virus protection
  • Scalable and secure firmware updating and secure boot capabilities
  • Robust certificate handling features to authenticate devices, network services, and individuals to each other
You can be sure someone's working on this, just might take some time before we see it.

Thanks guys, it looks like a group is working on more solutions that may be easier to implement and to provide more security options. The connectbot does work and allows me to connect with a text screen as expected. Thanks.

Next I will be trying to establish tunneling for web and mail traffic (yes, there are other email packages than gmail). I'm trying to make this work for a large business, and gmail does not meet the business needs. We can't really forward email to gmail due to SOX policies. I now have to read and setup the tunneling aspects.

Thanks again for the quick and very informative responses....you guys rule ;-)

As I understand it, LogMeIn has nothing for G1 yet. They've released a beta for the IPhone on or around Nov 28, 2008.
