by Aditya Thawardas on

caterpillar_cat_b15Caterpillar – yes the same Caterpillar that manufactures construction equipment – has created a tough and rugged phone for users who work and play in extreme conditions. We told you about the Cat B15 in February, and now the phone designed to be the ”most progressive, durable and rugged device available on the market” is ready to launch in North America.

The dust-proof and scratch resistant phone can survive drops up to 5.9 feet, and can be submerged in water as deep as 3.2 feet for up to 30 minutes without a problem. The 4-inch touchscreen display on the Cat B15 can even be used with wet fingers and can operate in temperatures from -4° to 131° F. Of course, it’s a smartphone after all, and comes with Jelly Bean 4.1, a dual-core 1GHz processor, and 4GB of internal memory.  Pretty impressive.

The phone is available online now at $349. You can read all of the specifications  after the break. » Read the rest

Panasonic_P51_Launch_India

Panasonic recently decided to launch its first device in Indian markets with the Panasonic P51. The phone will come loaded up with Android 4.2, a 5-inch, 720p LCD screen, and a quad-core 1.2GHz MediaTek processor. The phone is slightly reminiscent of a lower-end Galaxy Note 3, as it ships with a capacitive stylus and a magnetic flip cover. The RAM sits at only 1GB, there are 4GB of expandable storage, and the phone includes an 8MP rear-camera, a 1.3MP front-facing camera, and support for both HSPA+ and dual SIM cards.

The phone will launch in India next week at 26,900 rupees ($517 USD) contract-free which is a little expensive but should be a bargain when compared to its competition from Samsung. Hit the break for the full press release. » Read the rest

China’s Meitu Corporation has announced a phone designed specifically for women, called the MeituKiss HD. The phone will challenge the Oppo Ulike 2′s front-facing 5-megapixel camera with 8-megapixel cameras on both on the front and back of the device. Also equipped with a “face beautifying” feature, the phone is clearly marketed to women who love to take photos of themselves. Despite the impressive camera specs, for some reason the MeituKiss can only shoot video at up to 720p.

The MeituKiss also includes a 4.5-inch 720p HD screen, MediaTek’s 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, dual-SIM support, Android 4.2, 8GB of internal storage, and a microSD memory card slot for extra space. The phone runs at CN¥ 2,199, equivalent to around $360 USD, and comes in either pink or white. Preorder sales begin today for the first 18,888 devices, and a full launch will follow on June 6.

MediaTek quad-core MT6589T benchmark yields positive results

MediaTek_MT6589T_AnTuTu_Benchmark

MediaTek jumped into the quad-core game a couple of months ago with the announcement of the MT6589. MediaTek has always been known to be in lesser known brands in China, but the likes of Sony are realizing the potential that MediaTek offers. For instance, the turbo version of the MT6589 (MT6589T) was just benchmarked with some very positive results. Now you guys know I am not a fan of benchmarks because they don’t translate to everyday use, but they do give you a good idea for comparing one chip to another.

The latest AnTuTu result was 14,525, which isn’t Snapdragon 600 levels, but then again this is isn’t for high-end phones. It’s right on par with the Snapdragon S4 Pro, which makes this chip a worthy contender in the budget game.

Sony-CX190-camera-sample

Sony’s new mid-range offering the CX190 (not to be confused with the recently leaked Sony C3) has found its way online in the form of a Picasa sample shown above. Currently codenamed the Xperia C, the modest device is rumored to pack a dual-core Qualcomm processor (either the MSM8627 or the MSM8230), 1 GB of RAM, 4 GB of storage and a microSD card. It is also expected to have a 4″ display with a 480 x 854 resolution.

The device will run Android 4.1.2 and house a 5 megapixel camera capable of recording video in 720p HD. With these specs its safe to assume that the CX190 will be available for a fairly low price point. While nothing has been officially announced, rumor has it that Sony will announce it at the IFA electronics expo in Berlin at the end of August.

Sony C3 leaks, possibly Sony’s first MediaTek phone

by Harrison Kaminsky on
tagged , ,

sony-c3-quad-core-mediatek-phone

Manufacturers in the Chinese market have been using MediaTek chips in their phones for a while now, as it’s a cost-efficient solution— the only problem is that most of these companies have not yet created an aesthetically-pleasing device using the chip.

In March we reported that Sony would be bringing something to the table, and it looks like they will because the Sony C3 packed with a MediaTek chip leaked today. Rumors point to Sony building the phone using the quad-core MT6589 processor or the updated 1.5GHz MT6589T chip. We’ll let you guys know when more information is available.

TalkAndroid_Weekly_Recap

We had another busy week at TalkAndroid so here’s a recap of all the top stories. We finally published our review of the Galaxy S 4, and although the bootloader is locked on many variants, a solution is eminent. Probably the biggest story that didn’t get that much attention was the fact that the Samsung Galaxy S 4 was approved by the U.S. Department of Defense based on Samsung’s security suite called KNOX. This is only going to strengthen Samsung’s mobile market share dominance. Google Glass news was a plenty, and we saw what appears to be a real leak of the Motorola XFON. Lastly, will Paranoid Android be the ROM of choice with their new Halo notifications? It’s time to get caught up and get ready for another exciting week.
