A recent analysis claims only 10% of Samsung’s newest flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S 4, is shipping with Samsung’s own Exynos 5 Octa chip. Considering the device is on pace to become the company’s fastest selling smartphone in history, one might think Samsung would want to put more of their own hardware in the hands of consumers. However, Samsung seems to think it is more important to put devices in the hands of consumers regardless of the component sources. So in the case of the Galaxy S 4, the majority of the phones are shipping with Qualcomm chips. » Read the rest

Google planning to launch subscription-based music service to compete with Spotify

Google is planning to introduce a new subscription-based streaming music service to compete with Spotify and other similar services. The feature will be integrated into Google Play and could be introduced as early as this morning at Google I/O, Google’s annual developer-centric conference.

The service has been in development for some time now, and when launched will put Google at an advantage over competitors like Apple and Amazon, who have yet to launch an integrated streaming music service to their platform. And with the lackluster sales the Play Music Store has accrued, this could be the jump-start to help them catch up with iTunes, the largest retailer of music in the United States. » Read the rest

Samsung Galaxy S 4 breaks the S 3 record by selling 4 million units in 5 days

It doesn’t appear that any of the recent court problems that plague Samsung across the globe, have slowed it down any. Chosun Ilbo is announcing that Samsung has eclipsed their own record held by the Galaxy S III of 3 million units shipped worldwide in 21 days. The new record holder is their Galaxy S 4 which shipped 4 million units in 26 days. When asked for comment by Chosun Ilbo, Samsung had this to say:

“As of Friday, we have sold more than 6 million units, and we predict that we could break the 10-million mark by as early as the end of this month.”

Those are some pretty impressive numbers, and it doesn’t seem Samsung is phased by Apple’s recent addition of the S 4 to the pending 2014 trial of infringing devices. Like always we will keep an eye on this and let you know as soon as Samsung crosses the 10 million mark, which as it sounds shouldn’t be too far away.

Apple preparing to wage war once again with Samsung, adds Samsung Galaxy S 4 to list of patent infringements

Apple is currently preparing for its second patent infringement trial against Samsung scheduled for spring 2014, and plans to present 22 products that it believes infringe iOS user interface patents. Unsurprisingly, yesterday Apple announced that it has analyzed the Samsung Galaxy S 4 after its release and has since “concluded that it is an infringing device and accordingly intends to move for leave to add the Galaxy S 4 as an infringing product.”

In order to add the Galaxy S 4 to this list, Apple will be forced to eliminate another Samsung product from the list, as Judge Lucy Koh has ordered the company to limit the number of patent claims and infringing devices ahead of the trial.

There really isn’t any specific information pertaining to why exactly Apple believes the Galaxy S 4 infringes upon their own UI patents, but we’re sure some more information will be released as we come closer to the beginning of the trial.

Smartphone sales in Q1 2013 great for Android, amasses whopping 75% of market share

Android and iOS have been neck and neck battling for the title of “leading smartphone OS” for years now, but this month’s numbers don’t suggest a tight competition whatsoever. In the first quarter of 2013, Android-powered smartphones accounted for about 75% of all smartphones sold in this time-frame. Apple’s iOS came far behind, selling only 18.2% worth of the market share. Surprisingly the failing RIM (Blackberry) was able to outsell Microsoft’s Windows 8 Phones by 0.1%. It isn’t a big difference, but that’s definitely saying something about Microsoft’s success in the smartphone market.

Perhaps the most interesting of all this is that Android’s flagship for the year, the Samsung Galaxy S 4 hasn’t even been released yet. Android’s dominance over the market is expected to surpass that of 75% in Q2 2013. » Read the rest

15GB of free storage now offered between Drive, Gmail and Photos

google_drive_15gbGoogle knows that everybody loves more free storage space, so they have tripled the amount of free cloud-based storage they offer on Google Drive from 5GB to 15GB. Kind of. Previously, Google Drive offered 5GB of storage, and Gmail offered 10GB. Now, 15GB of free storage will be shared between Drive, Gmail, and Google+ photos (previously Picasa), so while there is still the same amount of space being offered, users can now freely choose how they want to split up their 15GB. Compared to other free cloud storage competitors, Dropbox offers 2GB of free storage, Apple iCloud 5GB, and Microsoft SkyDrive 7GB.

In addition to the additional free space, the previous lowest tier option for additional storage space, $2.49 per month for 25GB, has been removed, making the new cheapest option $4.99 for 100GB. All of these changes will roll out in the next few weeks.

We had another busy week at TalkAndroid so here’s a recap of all the top stories. Google I/O is next week and we have the full scoop on the new and improved Nexus 7. Rumors say the Motorola X phone is scrapped for the time being, but a recent FCC filing seems to indicate it might actually be sooner rather than later. We weren’t expecting to see it announced next week, but could we get a surprise? Google Babel is expected to be unveiled under the “Hangouts” name, and recent developments support that Google will unveil an updated Nexus 4 with LTE.  Lastly, Google will unveil cloud sync gaming with Play Games. There were a lot of new apps, including a couple of reviews as well. It’s time to get caught up and get ready for another exciting week.
