‘Next Step’ for Samsung Exynos 5 Octa is to utilize all 8 cores at the same time, coming in Q4

Samsung hinted the “next step” was coming for Exynos processors, and we now know what it is. Are you sitting down? Samsung just announced a Heterogeneous Multi-Processing (HMP) solution for the Exynos 5 Octa. What on earth is that? To put it simply, HMP will allow the use of all 8 cores of the octa to be used at the same time.

Currently the octa includes 4 Cortex-A15 cores and 4 Cortex-A7 cores, which is referred to as ARM big.LITTLE technology. In it’s current state, apps run on either the Cortex-A7s (LITTLE) or the Cortex-A15s (big), but now apps will get the benefit of all 8 cores at the same time. This will obviously enhance both performance and efficiency.

HMP will be introduced in quarter 4, but they didn’t specify if current devices could be updated or new hardware is required. I assume the latter. Hit the break for the full press release.

Updated Samsung Exynos 5 Octa officially announced along with Twitter sweepstakes

Samsung officially announced the newest version of their Exynos 5 Octa processor today with a heavy emphasis on the graphics capabilities. For the first time in the industry, graphics will be driven by a six-core chipset, the ARM Mali-T628 gpu to be specific. Samsung claims the new Mali chipset will boost 3D graphic processing capabilities more than two times over the current Exynos 5 Octa chip. The new technology will also enable the gpu to handle some computational operations through General-Purpose computing on Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU). According to Samsung’s vice president of System LSI marketing, Taehoon Kim, “demand for richer graphic experiences is growing rapidly nowadays…in order to meet that demand from both OEMs and end users, we developed this processor which enables superb graphical performance without compromising power consumption.” » Read the rest

Samsung Exynos 5 Octa Will Support All 20 LTE Bands

While those of us in the U.S. will just get the Galaxy S 4 with a quad-core Snapdragon processor, other countries are fortunate enough to get the Exynos 5 Octa on-board. If you are able to get your hands on the S 4 or future Samsung device with an Octa processor, there is some good news when it comes to LTE support. According to the official Samsung Exynos Twitter page, the Exynos 5 Octa will support all 20 LTE bands allowing fast data speeds worldwide. As far as what modem it will be paired with and how many bands will be supported on a single device, Samsung has yet to release more information.

Samsung Exynos 5210 processor revealed, Could power the Galaxy S 4 Mini

It appears Samsung has another SoC known as the Exynos 5210. As pictured above, Linux dev tools were committed to a smdk5210 at Free-electrons.com. Unfortunately we don’t have much to go on, but it very well could be a quad-core that features the same big.LITTLE technology that’s in the Exynos Octa-core 5410. The belief is that the 5210 will sport dual Cortex-A15′s with dual Cortex-A7′s. On the other hand, it could also be a dual-core Cortex-A15.

The next question is which device(s) will we see the Exynos 5210 in, and all signs point to the Galaxy S 4 Mini that was leaked late last week. This device will feature a 4.3-inch display and much like the its bigger brother, the Galaxy S 4, it will feature different processors based on region. The HSPA+ GT-i9190 is expected to have a quad-core CPU and the dual-SIM GT-i9192 is rumored to have a dual-core CPU.

Samsung Exynos 5 Dual-Core SoC May Possibly Bring Retina-Level Displays And Performance

Samsung’s upcoming Exynos 5 dual-core SoC we told you about yesterday is certainly expected to bring a new level of performance to Android devices. However, there’s the thought that the 1.7GHz chip will not only bring faster speeds, but it will also bring Retina-level displays on the various devices that are powered by the superchip. The thought is that traditional ARM A9 chips (i.e. Tegra 3 and Apple’s A5 chips) have superior power usage, but are a bit limited when it comes to the best performance possible. The new ARM A15 chip (which the Exynos 5 is based off of) is made for devices demanding peak performance— at the sacrifice of slightly increased power usage.

Samsung Exynos To Extend Battery Life Up To 70% With Arm’s big.Little Technology in 2012?

With recent leaks and mentionings of the Samsung Galaxy S III one has to wonder what kind of CPU will we see under the hood?  Recent rumors were that it’s possible we could see a quad-core 2.0 GHz processor in the first half of 2012.  And while that sounds a little far fetched, it may not be all that crazy after all.  With the recent announcement of the upcoming 1.5 GHz dual-core Exynos 4212 system-on-a-chip (SoC) which can be found on several Galaxy S II’s, it’s only a matter of time.  In slight contrast to the 4210, it will now be built with Samsung’s advanced 32nm High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) low-power process touting 30 percent lower power levels.  Subsequently, you can expect higher speeds on the GPU as well hence Sammy’s boast that the chip will perform with “50 percent higher 3D graphics performance over the previous processor generation from Samsung.”  Well, who in the world wouldn’t want a device sporting 30 percent lower power output while simultaneously offering 50 percent higher 3D graphics?   » Read the rest

Samsung Exynos 4212 Announced Clocking In At 1.5Ghz With A Faster GPU

Following up on the awesomeness of the Samsung Exynos 4210 processor that powers their Galaxy S IIs, Samsung has announced its successor, the Exynos 4212. The 4212 is a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 application processor that’s clocking in at 1.5Ghz. It’s also built on Samsung’s 32nm High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) low-power process giving it a 30% boost in power efficiency. As far as gaming is concerned, this chip has an enhanced GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) that will push out 50% better 3D graphics in comparison to their previous chip.

While Rumorville is saying this new 4212 processor will be powering the Nexus Prime that we may seen in Nov., Samsung will be giving a sampling to a few select customers later this year. We may possibly hear more about all this on Oct. 11th at the upcoming CTIA show in San Diego, so stay tuned for possible Nexus goodness. Hit up the break for the full press release.

Samsung announces new Exynos processor with integrated 4G LTE modem

Today, Samsung has unveiled a brand new Exynos ModAp processor that features an integrated 4G LTE modem. This is a quad-core SoC that supports both regular LTE speeds as well as LTE Advanced. At the very least, it is now possible to achieve at least 150Mbps. Of course, a new processor always includes better performance in terms of multitasking and support for high resolution camera lenses.

By integrating a 4G LTE modem with this new Exynos processor, Samsung has finally caught on to what Qualcomm has been up to for the last two years. This means it may finally be possible hardware manufacturers in the United States choose this processor for smartphones rather than just Samsung rolling with it for tablets.

Samsung Gear 2 teardown reveals Exynos processor

We already had a chance to see a teardown of the Galaxy S 5, so now we turn our attention to the Gear 2. Famous for complete teardowns, iFixit did just that. Samsung never mentioned what processor was powering the Gear 2 or Gear 2 Neo, but thanks to this teardown, we now know it’s a dual-core 1GHz Exynos 3250.

iFixit also gave a repairability score of 8 out of 10, which isn’t too bad. They found that the watch band is “super easy to remove,” and the screws, clips, and spring contacts make the device easy to open. The battery can easily be removed and replaced.
