Samsung buys 10% share of Pantech worth $48 million

by Roy Alugbue on

Samsung— already one of the world’s largest manufacturers— has further exerted its powerful influence in the tech world buy purchasing a 10% stake in manufacturer Pantech. The deal which is expected to be finalized by sometime in June, allows Samsung to purchase 53 billion won (approximately $48 million USD) worth of shares and helps Sammy better finance its operations and attract more investor interest going forward. Additionally, Pantech previously sourced many of its components and parts for its devices from Samsung, so the deal helps Sammy and Pantech’s relationship since Pantech buys chips and LCD units from Samsung.

Now all that’s left to do is to play the waiting game to see the imminent outcome of this deal.

According to a report by Strategy Analytics, Samsung captured 95% of Android’s profit in the first quarter of 2013.  » Read the rest

Verizon announces the Pantech Perception smartphone, brings touchless controls for a modest price

Sure we have seen some smartphones tout some impressive toucheless control features, but those type of devices come at a king’s ransom— so they may not be accessible to a wider range of customers. Fortunately Pantech quickly realized that the technology should be available to a wider range of customers and has introduced its brand-new Perception smartphone. The device is a typical mid-ranger which features Ice Cream Sandwich loaded up, a dual-core Snapdragon chip, 4.8-inch Super AMOLED HD display, an 8MP camera + 2MP FFC and 16 gigs of on-board storage. Sure those may be ho-hum to the masses— but the real ace in Pantech’s cards is the arrival of Motion Sense technology on the Perception. The technology allows users of the device to do things like wave their hands to answer calls or moving your finger up and down to scroll up and down through a list. Pretty awesome.

This smartphone is set for arrival on Verizon’s wireless network on April 25th, which should make customers of that network happy, but customers of other networks a wee bit sad. But if you are on Big Red’s network— the great thing about the Perception smartphone and its Motion Sense technology is the impressive price it will arrive at: $99 on-contract (after a $50 mail-in-rebate). Pantech Vega Iron is official, features 5-inch 1080p display with a very small bezel

Pantech_Vega_Iron

Pantech plans on giving Samsung, HTC, and LG a run for their money with the Vega Iron. We told you about this one last week, but Pantech just made it official. It will come with a 5-inch 1080p display, a 1.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 CPU, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, 13MP rear camera, 2150mAh battery, WiFi that supports 1 gigabit, and Android 4.1.2.

The Vega Iron sports a metal frame and the smallest bezel ever in a smartphone, at 2.4-millimeters. Look for this one to go on sale in Korea, but we have no word on if it will appear in other areas.
