Name of HTC One Mini, 720p HD screen confirmed

by Aditya Thawardas on

htc_one_miniThere’s finally some concrete evidence of a mini HTC One that will be called the HTC One Mini. The guys at TNW found a User Agent profile of the device on a Taiwanese website owned by HTC. Besides the name and model number (PO581) being confirmed, through the profile we also now know that the phone will come with Android 4.2 and a 720p HD screen.

Since smartphones became popular, they have been getting bigger and bigger. The Galaxy S 4 Mini and now the HTC One Mini suggest otherwise. There’s still a lot left to discover about the One Mini, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated.

Shazam – former HTC execs startup Kazam to produce smartphones

by Jeff Causey on
tagged ,

kazam_logo

Last month HTC was purged of many top executives, including Michael Coombes, the former head of U.K. sales for HTC and James Atkins, a U.K. marketing head for HTC. Those two have resurfaced only weeks later with the announcement that they are launching Kazam, a new smartphone manufacturer. Coombes will be CEO for the new company and Atkins will serve as chief marketing officer. According to the two, Kazam will be about “stunning design, robust hardware, and intuitive technology, underpinned with improved customer service.”

The move is certainly a bold one at a time when we see companies like HTC, Sony and LG struggling against the twin behemoths Apple and Samsung. Considering the trouble established companies are having, it is hard to imagine a startup becoming successful. Kazam will have the challenge of both sourcing parts for the devices it plans to produce and striking deals to get connected with carriers willing to offer their devices. One glimmer of hope is the fact that the company plans to focus on the European market where unlocked devices are more popular. Kazam also promises to differentiate itself by offering support after a sale is made, although it is unclear what that means. Perhaps there will be more of a focus on keeping devices up to the most recent version of Android, assuming that is the operating system chosen for their smartphones.

HTC confirms Android 4.2 for HTC One, despite early update being pulled

HTC_One_Front_Bottom_Speaker_Capacitive_Buttons_TA

HTC had apparently begun pushing out an Android 4.2.2 update to the HTC One, but according to UK carrier Three, the update was pulled with no specific reasoning. They didn’t, however, say when or if HTC was going to begin rolling the update out again. HTC attempted to clarify some things, saying the One is still slated to receive Android 4.2.2, but customers are going to have to wait just a little bit longer before its available. Better late than never, I guess.

Hopefully we’ll see that update sooner rather than later.

HTC announces the Desire 200 smartphone: a budget device with Beats Audio

HTC_Desire_200

The next great HTC budget device has officially been unveiled to the masses with the introduction of the Desire 200 smartphone. Like many of HTC’s previous budget offerings, the smartphone comes in a compact, yet sleek package as the device will feature a 3.5-inch display encased in a nice black or metallic grey shell. Specs-wise, the smartphone has your typical run-of-the-mill items like a single-core Snapdragon chip, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of on-board storage (plus an expandable microSD slot), a 5MP camera and a 1,230mAh battery. Oh and for prospective customers out there looking for an extra kick when listening to music, the Desire 200 will feature Beats Audio as well.

While the newest addition to the HTC family is officially launched now, there’s still no word on when or where the device will hit retail outlets— nor do we know how much it will cost for now. The good thing is that the wait for the specific details shouldn’t be too much longer from now.

Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg travels to S. Korea to pitch next Facebook phone to executives

Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg recently visited South Korea to meet with top executives from Samsung’s mobile division, reportedly asking Samsung to launch a phone with a Facebook interface. This would be the next step in Facebook’s quest to be the next Google, following HTC’s disappointing HTC First, a mid-range Android-powered Facebook phone that has apparently only sold around 10,000 units. Between those sales numbers and Samsung’s extremely close ties with Google, a Samsung/Facebook collaboration is highly unlikely.

The HTC First was the most recent attempt from HTC to provide a Facebook-oriented smartphone, previously launching the poorly received HTC Salsa and HTC Status in 2011. The First introduced the Facebook Home launcher, a disappointing attempt at a launcher replacement with a built-in news feed and not much else. AT&T dropped the unit due to its lackluster sales and lukewarm reception.

Samsung has yet to comment on the proposal, though its safe to assume they will not be manufacturing the next Facebook phone. Let us know in the comments section if you think another Facebook phone would be a welcome addition or if past attempts are proof enough that a Facebook phone just isn’t meant to be.

HTC Butterfly S rumored to head to Sprint, not Verizon

by James Gray on

htc_butterfly

HTC insider and developer @LlabTooFeR has been on a roll tonight, just moments ago hinting that the HTC One Mini was headed to T-Mobile this summer, and now dropping another hint that the HTC Butterfly S will not be headed to Verizon like its predecessor, but will more likely see a launch on Sprint’s network.

The Butterfly S is going to be announced on June 19th and will feature the same 5 inch, 1080p display as the Butterfly (or Droid DNA on Verizon) an updated Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, an improved processor, HTC’s excellent UltraPixel camera, and the new Sense 5. No word on price, but it will presumably cost around the same amount as the One.

HTC One Mini (M4) rumored to launch on T-Mobile

by James Gray on

htconeminitweet

HTC’s next member of their One family of smartphones, the HTC One Mini (previously known as the HTC M4) is rumored to be landing in T-Mobile stores sometime this summer. HTC developer @LLabTooFeR tweeted that all signs point to a T-Mobile release, with no word on availability through other carriers. The One Mini is one of two rumored devices being released by HTC alongside the HTC One Max, HTC’s newest entry into the phablet market.

The HTC One Mini is rumored to pack a dual-core processor, 2GB of RAM, Ultrapixel camera and Sense 5 all packed into the same aluminum design as the One, front-facing BoomSound speakers included.

As the market for small phones shrinks (pun intended), a device of this caliber is much needed. Let us know below if this device piques your interest.

Specs leak for the highly anticipated Motorola X phone, featuring HD screen, 2GB of RAM and dual-core processor

google-x-phone

Unsurprisingly, infamous twitter user @evleaks has been gracious enough to list the specs of the new Motorola X phone, and its looking to be a solid mid-to-high end device. The Google-owned company has put together a phone running Android 4.2.2 Jellybean powered by 2GB of RAM, a dual-core 1.7GHz MSM8960 Pro processor, and comes with 16GB of internal storage. For those of you worried that a dual-core processor won’t satisfy your needs, it should be noted that in benchmarks the device out-performed the Samsung Galaxy S 4 and the HTC One. On the outside they’ve put a generous 10-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. The display has a 1196 x 720, 720p resolution and its safe to assume it will be of the standard IPS variety.  » Read the rest
