Android Browser Now Most Popular Mobile Browser

by Ed Caggiani on
tagged , , , , ,

With all the options Android users have for browsers, from Firefox to Dolphin to Chrome, it’s still not that surprising that the most used is the stock Android browser that comes pre-installed on most Android devices. But how does it stack up over all mobile browsers on all platforms? Apparently, very well, according to the latest statistics report from analytics firm StatCounter.

The Android browser has finally taken the lead over its competitors this month with a 22.67% share, and is now the top mobile browser in the world. Opera comes in a close second at 21.7%, followed by Apple’s 21.06%. This is a 2.47% increase over last year, when the Android browser ended up at 20.2%. Opera dropped from last year’s 24.22%, while Apple’s Safari browser increased from December’s 18.41%.

Nokia came in next at 11.24%, followed by Blackberry at 6.53%, but each is generally trending downward, the latter’s chart looking like a good hill to sled down. Check out the chart after the break.

Are Android Apps Being Published on Blackberry App World Without Developer Consent?

by Ed Caggiani on
tagged , , , , , ,

After RIM pushed out their 2.0 update for the Playbook, Android apps were suddenly available on the platform through their Android Player. The company is even giving out free Playbooks to Android developers who port their apps over.

Playbook users, once upgraded to 2.0, started downloading the Android-based Dolphin HD Browser from Blackberry App World as a better replacement to the stock browser. Interestingly, though, the makers of the Dolphin browser, MoboTap, did not authorize their browser to be added to RIM’s app marketplace. So how did it get there?

The CyanogenMod Team Wants You to Weigh, Do You Want a CM App Store for Rooted Apps?

by Jack Holt on
tagged , , , , , , ,

I know what you’re thinking. Why the heck do we need yet another app store on our phones, what with Amazon, GetJar, and the Android Market and a slew of other apps that do this same thing. However, I think you’ll want to hear me out on this one because this proposes to be a different kind of app store. Here’s the back story.

Recently Koush, the man behind ClockworkMod Recovery and ROM Manager, came out with a tethering app that bypassed the need for a tethering plan and one that did so without the need for root access. While there are other apps that do the same thing, Koush is known for bringing us very good software. Well it wasn’t long before carriers banned the ability to access this app in the Android Market as they did with other tethering apps. It’s those moves done by carriers that spurred this article to begin with. So here’s the deal. » Read the rest

GetJar to Add Update Notifications to Android Applications

by Stacy Bruce on
tagged , , , ,

GetJar just announced that they will be adding a new update notification feature that will allow developers the opportunity to reach out users to let them know when an app update is available. For example, say you have the Angry Birds Seasons app downloaded to your phone via GetJar, the developers can now push out a notification telling you that new levels or features are available for download. In addition, GetJar suggests using updates as an engagement tool so that developers can send friendly reminders about apps that users may have forgotten about.

Although still in beta, the new feature is currently being tested and should hit airways relatively soon. As far as user updates go, GetJar 3.5 began rolling out last week and it looks to be “stable and sustainable” according to GetJar. For further developer information hit the link below.

Newest Dolphin Browser Launches Exclusively On GetJar

by Andrew Greenfield on
tagged , ,

For the many people (including myself) that aren’t overly thrilled about Android’s stock launcher, Dolphin Browser is one of the most popular alternatives. It’s fast, looks nice, and has tons of options. In an interesting twist Dolphin Browser v7.0, the next version of Dolphin, will be launching exclusively on a third party market: GetJar. The biggest update is Dolphin Connect.

Dolphin 7.0 is moving your mobile experience to the cloud by introducing Dolphin Connect.  With Dolphin Connect your bookmarked sites and your browsing preferences will be kept in sync across all of your devices. No longer forget web addresses—Dolphin Connect remembers them for you. With Dolphin Connect, Dolphin will once again reshape the mobile browsing experience.

Why would a company want to sidestep the biggest market it has? Perhaps GetJar offered a few incentives to launch it their first. Something tells me it won’t stay exclusive for too long though. Any of our readers die hard GetJar fans?

Quick Look At Today’s Free Amazon App: Cut The Rope [Hands On Video]

by Robert Nazarian on
tagged , , , , ,

I would say that most of the time Amazon’s Free App of the day is generally not that appealing, but today is an exception with Cut The Rope. It was a huge hit with iOS before hitting Android 3 months ago. When it debuted, it was available for free via GetJar, but ad supported. After one week’s time it became available as ad free on the Android Market for .99cents, which is a bargain. Today, everyone gets another chance to try it out for free, but this time it’s the ad free version.

Cut The Rope was created by ZeptoLab, and it’s a highly addictive puzzle-style game. Your goal is to make sure the candy gets to the little green monster, named Om Nom. You will do it by cutting a series of ropes while trying to capture all the stars. There are 7 levels which include 25 different puzzles per level. That is a total of 175 puzzles so there’s enough to satisfy your addiction.

The best thing about games like this is it doesn’t take a lot of time. Whenever you have a few minutes, you can quickly play a level. Check out our quick hands on video and hit the source link to download this one. You won’t be disappointed.
