Waterproof LG Optimus GJ E975W officially announced, will be priced at $600

Today LG announced their high-end waterproof handset called the Optimus GJ. The device is just slightly larger than the original Optimus G at 131.9 x 68.9 x 8.5 mm vs. 136.9 x 68.9 x 9.9 mm. It can stay underwater up to 1 meter for as long as 3 minutes. It also features a 4.7 inch IPS HD display, Bluetooth 4.0, 13MP rear camera, quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory, MicroSD card slot, and a 2,280 mAh battery.

The GJ should be available around June for about $600.

FCC certification for Motorola XT1056 surfaces, appears headed to Sprint

It has been a few days since we had any new rumors about the Motorola X Phone, but the latest bit of news comes to us from the FCC. A filing for a Motorola XT1056 has been approved by the FCC with the capability of running on LTE Band 25. This appears to support a device headed to the Sprint network. The device will also support HSPA+ on 2100, 1900 and 850 MHz bands. The other information is similar to the XT1058 that surfaced recently with support for AT&T’s network, including NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 LE+EDR, and 802.11ac WiFi capabilities.

Sony Xperia UL officially announced for Japan

Last month we heard about the Sony Xperia UL, and now it’s official. It includes a 5-inch 1080p display, a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, an Exmor RS 13.1MP camera with the ability to capture 15 frames per second, 2300mAh battery, NFC, IR blaster, and Bluetooth 4.0. We had another busy week at TalkAndroid so here’s a recap of all the top stories. Google I/O was this week, so it’s no surprise that it dominated the headlines. Google officially unveiled their new unified messaging service called Hangouts and their new gaming service called Play Games Services. They also unveiled their new streaming music serviced called Play Music All Access. The only hardware announcement was the Galaxy S 4 Google Edition. All in all, it was an exciting event that featured a lot of new stuff for development, which is what Google I/O is all about. Even though I/O was the focal point for the week, there was still a lot of other news, so it’s time to get caught up and get ready for another exciting week.

Fitbit adds Bluetooth 4.0 sync support for Samsung Galaxy S 4 in new update

While we await the imminent release of Android 4.3 and its inclusion of Bluetooth Smart support, some app developers have taken it upon themselves to start adding Bluetooth 4.0 syncing to their apps, including Fitbit, a healthy lifestyle tracking application.

As they added support for the Samsung Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II back in February, today they announced that the app will now support the Galaxy S 4, with all of the efficiency improvements that it brings. Obviously since the new Bluetooth support is not yet standard in Android devices, Fitbit says that custom development work is needed for individual smartphones. Obviously Samsung’s new flagship device was an early priority.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 Mini specs leak, will feature high-powered Exynos 5210 chip

Yesterday we showed you some leaked pictures of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 Mini, due for release at some point this month. We now have some more information on the device, as we now know that it will be run by the Exynos 5210 chip. This chip is a big.LITTLE architecture that combines the power-efficient Cortex A7 with the performance-driven Cortex A15.

The leaked spreadsheet shows this information, which has been confirmed by Samsung, as well as some other specs about the phone that we already knew about. The phone should come with a 4.3-inch qHD display, and RAM will most likely depend on the market— 4G markets will most likely get 2GB, while 3G markets will most likely get 1GB.

Some surprising information included on the spreadsheet is that it will launch with 32GB of internal storage— perhaps this is Samsung’s apology for the internal storage debacle with the Galaxy S 4. The spreadsheet also mentions that the Galaxy S 4 Mini will ship with Android 4.0 ICS on board, which is a bit confusing, considering the Galaxy S 4 is set to ship with 4.2. It could be a typo, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

Nova Launcher update improves app icon handling

Popular launcher app Nova Launcher released a new update over the weekend that adds much more flexibility and control over app icons to go along with normal optimizations and bug fixes. While many people put their favorite apps on their homescreens, others like to access them using the app drawer. This is where many of Nova Launcher’s recent updates are focused. Users can customize app icons and titles used in the app drawer independent of the theme they currently have selected. Users can also group apps into folders in the app drawer and then drag these folders to the homescreen. This essentially means folders can be created from the homescreen or the app drawer. » Read the rest

FCC filing mentions Motorola XT1058, could be the XFON for AT&T

We’ve been seeing X Phone rumors everywhere recently, including leaked pictures of a potential device last week. Today we have some concrete information to share. A new FCC filing mentions the Motorola XT1058 with specs including Bluetooth 4.0, NFC capabilities, 802.11ac WiFi, and LTE bands compatible with AT&T. The picture in the filing, posted above, looks awfully similar to last week’s leaked photos of the XFON for AT&T. After releasing their latest DROID RAZRs for Verizon, this filing suggests that Motorola could be releasing their first AT&T phone since last year’s Atrix HD.

If the model number XT1058 looks familiar, it’s because last week we showed you information suggesting an XT1055. Two model numbers so similar further supports Motorola advisor Guy Kawasaki’s comments regarding personalization of phone hardware. Considering an FCC filing, the X Phone could be unveiled in the near future. The Samsung Galaxy S 4 Zoom could be a cameraphone with a 16MP sensor

I am not sure where the name “cameraphone” comes from, but if it’s a smartphone with a camera, isn’t it still a smartphone? Well SamMobile received some information regarding the Galaxy S4 Zoom, and they are calling it a camera phone, which doesn’t make sense. The bottomline is this is a smartphone that has a 16MP camera, a 4.3-inch qHD (960 x 540) Super AMOLED display, 8GB of storage, microSD slot for extra storage, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, A-GPS and Jelly Bean. No word on the processor or RAM, but don’t expect anything earth shattering.

It’s codename is SM-C1010, which means it might not be the same device that we reported last week. It’s expected to launch in June or July in both black and white, but I doubt we will see it till the later summer or after IFA 2013. We will certainly let you know more as soon as we find out.
