AUO set to provide display panels for next-generation Nexus 7 tablet

We know that Google’s second-generation Nexus 7 tablet is on the way, but not much about the device is known— especially since we didn’t see much of a tease at Google I/O this year. Fortunately, it appears that we’re finally getting some long-awaited information about the venerable device as news has surfaced that it’ll not only arrive this summer with high expectations, but it will come with a brand-new display unit. According to the hit-or-miss Digitimes, Google and ASUS are turning to AU Optronics (AUO) to develop a 7-inch, low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) panel at a 1,900 x 1,200 resolution. Also reaffirming what we’ve previously heard, shipments are expected to begin as early as Q2 and the tablet is expected to see the 8 million unit mark, which should more than certainly help Google keep eating away at that tablet market share.

LoJack launches phone recovery service with the Samsung Galaxy S4 as its first supported device

LoJack, if you’re familiar with their software for computers and laptops, have made the jump into mobile device territory with the Samsung Galaxy S4 as their first supported device. With this software you’ll be able to trace, lock, and of course, remotely wipe your device if you choose to do so. Unlike other soft wares, LoJack stays in your phone no matter what you do to it, such as factory resetting the device. More importantly you’ll get LoJack’s experience with their years of success in the laptop and computer industry, so you know their representatives are highly trained to retrieve your device.

So far no date of the release has been set, but we expect it to be around this summer. Prices have yet to be confirmed but it should range depending on the longevity of your desired subscription. Hit up the break for the full press release!

We had another busy week at TalkAndroid so here’s a recap of all the top stories. Google I/O was this week, so it’s no surprise that it dominated the headlines. Google officially unveiled their new unified messaging service called Hangouts and their new gaming service called Play Games Services. They also unveiled their new streaming music serviced called Play Music All Access. The only hardware announcement was the Galaxy S 4 Google Edition. All in all, it was an exciting event that featured a lot of new stuff for development, which is what Google I/O is all about. Even though I/O was the focal point for the week, there was still a lot of other news, so it’s time to get caught up and get ready for another exciting week.

Upgraded ASUS Fonepad announced, will feature better processor and extra storage

ASUS has already announced the successor to their Fonepad model, which was confirmed to feature a better processor and extra storage. The new phone will ship with an Intel Atom Z2460 chip running at 1.6GHz and a whopping 32GB of build-in storage. It seems as though nothing else has been changed, which means the device will come with a 7-inch 1280 by 800 pixel IPS display, 1GB of RAM, a 3MP main camera, and a microSD slot for additional storage space.

Obviously the key feature of the Fonepad is the 3G radio built-in, allowing this tablet to make phone calls and browse the web without relying on WiFi. The phone has been confirmed to launch in Taiwan for the equivalent of $300 USD, which isn’t too bad when comparing it to the original ASUS Fonepad. There is no news about other markets the phone will be launched in, if any. We’ll update you when any news breaks.

Google TV gets bumped to Android 4.2.2 and the latest version of Chrome

Google TV has always been shunned a little more than other Google products, despite running Android. Well, if you were an early adopter of Google TV, there’s good news. According to Google, Google TV is being moved to Android 4.2.2, and Google TV is being reworked to allow OEM partners to quickly update their devices. The time frame will supposedly be cut from “months” down to “weeks.” Google TV will also be moved to the latest version of Chrome, as well as Chrome’s rather speedy six-week release cycle. Good news for owners, as this means your devices won’t be obsoleted quickly.

Google also said in their Google+ post that older devices should begin receiving updates soon, and we can expect to see new devices later this year. Nexus Q 2.0, anyone?

HP Announces Slatebook 10 x2, a convertible tablet with Tegra 4

HP probably didn’t time this product announcement very well, as it’s about to get completely overshadowed by Google I/O, but their new Slatebook 10 x2 is a solid tablet regardless. It sports a 10-inch 1080p screen with detachable keyboard dock, pretty similar to ASUS’s Transformer line, and is one of the first devices to use NVIDIA’s Tegra 4, aside from Project Shield. Aside from that, it’s running almost pure stock Android 4.2.2, so that’s always a plus.

The keyboard dock is the defining feature of the tab, and pretty similarly to the Transformer dock, it adds an extra battery in the dock, two USB ports, and a standard SD card reader in addition to the actual tablet’s microSD slot. Pricing is said to start at $479 in August, but no word on if that includes the dock or not. It shouldn’t be too much longer before we get more details from HP. We had another busy week at TalkAndroid so here’s a recap of all the top stories. Google I/O is next week and we have the full scoop on the new and improved Nexus 7. Rumors say the Motorola X phone is scrapped for the time being, but a recent FCC filing seems to indicate it might actually be sooner rather than later. We weren’t expecting to see it announced next week, but could we get a surprise? Google Babel is expected to be unveiled under the “Hangouts” name, and recent developments support that Google will unveil an updated Nexus 4 with LTE.  Lastly, Google will unveil cloud sync gaming with Play Games. There were a lot of new apps, including a couple of reviews as well. It’s time to get caught up and get ready for another exciting week.
