Just to add on a few commands to what stephen said:

(From a windows’ cmd, with adb setup with PATH set, etc)

adb shell
su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd /system/bin
cat sh > su
chmod 4755 su

*reboot*

Thanks for this guys, I was a bit baffled as to why my dev phone which i upgraded from 1.0 to 1.5 did not have root!

i “upgraded” my Retail version G1 to a devphone 1.5 with this NO problems. it just takes a few steps. all f the software and instructions can be found on the HTC website and the XDA forums. good luck

Never mind… IE works, problem apparently only with Firefox (which I used successfully to download the radio image).

Does anybody still have the 1.5 Recovery image supposedly linked to here: http://www.htc.com/www/support/android/adp.html#s3 ??

I can download the 1.5 radio image, but when I try to get either the 1.5 system image or the 1.5 recovery image I just get the License agreement and then get redirected back to the same support web page. Help!

bleh i installed cupcake but now the phone says i have the icon for missing sim card in the notification bar all the time and it says my phone has no # when i view about my phone -_-

I was unable to get root back for the image push from T-Mobile. But I was successful in getting root back for the dev phone by installing the HTC image from

http://www.htc.com/www/support/android/adp.html

and then applying the commands from http://phandroid.com/2009/04/29/adp-15-initial-thoughts/

“using adb as su”

mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd /system/bin
cat sh > su
chmod 4755 su

I reimaged from HTC since the image pushed from T-Mobile kept puking on me when I tried to use su under adb.

Android 1.5 (cupcake) feels great; speedier on actions, but lags when having a few apps running…
But more important: I LOST root access to my Android Dev Phone… Anyone knows how to get root access back?
