DROID X 2.2 update to come in early September

Over at the Motorola support forums, there was a thread started about issues on the DROID X with Exchange email.  ”Matt”, a Motorola employee, left the following statement:

First, I want to thank everyone for their help and patience as we worked though this. Much appreciated.

Some Droid X users are experiencing an issue using Exchange 2003 email. Though the email is arriving on the Droid X, no notifications are appearing. A fix for this will be included in the upgrade to Android 2.2 scheduled for deployment by early September.

Not exactly the time frame that most DROID X users were hoping for, but a time frame nonetheless.

What do our DROID X-touting readers think of this release date? Right on time, or a little too late? Let us know in the comments below!

Like I said earlier, this is taking way too long for these updates. Why can’t they all just come out at one time, not per phone? It seems silly to me!

  • Blue

It takes longer because each phone handles Android different, so Motorola has to make it so that Android 2.2 isn’t waiting for physical keystrokes along with “touch”strokes. Basic programming dictates that this makes it simpler and more stable, speeding up releases in the future. It’s slow, but it’s worth it in the long run.

  • Marty

Problem is Blue, a majority of the customers who purchased the Droid X were expecting to get android 2.2 very shortly after the phone was released… with the short time frames new phones are coming out, a month or two seems like eternity. This is the cell phone world, everything moves faster here…updates should as well.

  • Nate

I just can’t believe the Droid would get this before the X! I’m tired of these updates always getting ‘pushed back’. Just give us the update, if it breaks, let us revert back!

  • Brandon

This is hell waiting for this update to come out. Yeah I get it that this update is going to be well worth the wait as most good things are; but this update was promised late summer. September is basically fall. Now the Droid and Droid 2 are going to have this technology before the X? This doesn’t make sense. And Verizon, please make my phone ring louder.

  • Shannon

I am a bit bummed. I moved from the Droid with 2.2 to the Droid X with 2.1. ALMOST tempted to move back until the update is delivered. ALMOST.

Here’s what i don’t get the droid 2 launched this week with 2.2 and moto blur so obviously the os is ready and with almost identical hardware why haven’t all of us droid x users not recieved the update? I think is a bad marketing scheme to try and get ppl to purchase the droid 2

life is so hard.ihave money to waste on my unecessary mahince gobble cock but i want the latest time waste distraction so that i feel the strength of the lord flowing through my genetalia otherwise i think about how people starve and dont have access to basic medical care because they are monetarily poor but really the fact my rims arent big enough bothers me the most. but america has blacky puppet so that is pretty tight. oh that one part on that show was so awesome. i totally want that type of outfit because that expresses how i see the world. i love those toxic cell phone/computer dumps in china cause its so cutely ironic how they are made there shipped here then sent back when they are useless other than for hazardous recycling that can generate plenty of revenue to barely feed the family whose farm it overran. smartphone huh?

The more I have to wait while Motorola keeps pushing back, the more I think about jumbing ship all together and going to AT&T for a I-Phone.

  • Paul

I already returned the Droid X and got a Samsung Convoy. I don’t have time to screw around waiting for some update that could easily have been pushed to all the phones in the lineup by now!

  • Cockchoake

The focus on on getting a NEW phone to market. That phone will get all of the companies resources dedicated to making sure it has the latest and greatest software up and running. Everyone else get’s short shrift. It’s all about getting new customers and screwing you current customers, thus the locked in contracts and overpriced ‘non-contract’ phones. Typical American executive looter mentality. Loot and pillage, get those bonuses, take the golden parachute when you drive your company under; rinse – repeat.

It’s a good move on VZW part holding off on 2.2 for the Droid X. Don’t get me wrong, I have a Droid X and want it now, but with the Droid 2 launch, it’s an incentive for new customers to get on board with that phone with 2.2 installed. Patience

  • Chad

I really want 2.2 for my Droid X, I look for the update 2-3 times a day. I really am the type that has to have the latest and greatest, and really I don’t know why? I’m excited to get 2.2, but would rather wait for a finished product instead of a half-a$$ed beta release. My phone works and works well with 2.1, but the agony of waiting for Flash 10.1 support and Froyo to come out is tolerable I guess… I will sit and wait as patiently as I can. In the grand scheme of things it’s not really that big of a deal!

I just got an X as a new Verizon customer. I could see that it doesn’t support flash so I started searching the web and had a chat with a Verizon rep who was an idiot. He said 2.2 is out for the X. I had to educate him. He tried to push the 2 on me but I don’t want it. I can’t believe the X didn’t support flash out of the box. That’s as bad as the iphone!!

  • David

its just a cell phone, who cares

  • Kevin

The strength, or weakness of Android, is that it is customized for each device. And HTC “optimizes” a Droid differently than Motorola. You’ll have the Droid for 2 years so what another 2 weeks? Next, You’ll be wanting 2.3, aka Gingerbread

I have a X and I’m a Web Designer, I got the phone becuase I’m a super geek that absolutely must always be online all the time, mostly becuase of the type of job that i have. Anyways, I love my X, but am a little frustrated about this 2.2. We been waiting patiently, I think they should be working on getting the people who they promised will be able to have flash, that’s how they marketing the X and now…my friend who has a Droid 2 is able to do things that my X can’t do. And I have better hardware than he does…what gives…get with the program and get us our update!!!

  • brian

hey guess what no one lied to you summer isnt over until sept 22 so as long as 2.2 comes out by the 21st it is still late summer

  • john lyons

Per manager at my local verizon store. The main reason for the hold up on 2.2 is that the upgrade has been locking up people’s phones. So they want to make sure all the bugs are out before they finish releasing it.

“I just can’t believe the Droid would get this before the X! I’m tired of these updates always getting ‘pushed back’. Just give us the update, if it breaks, let us revert back!”

The older phonea are receiving the updates first because they’ve been on the market longer, therefore the software/bugs/fixes/improvements have had more development time. I am a droid x owner and my boyfriend has the motorola droid, he received his 2.2 update and I’m just as anxious to get mine, however, I am not without understanding of the logic in the wait time for my droid x 2.2 update.

  • Paul

I don’t understand what makes one update for one phone different from another. Do they all not have the same infrastructure? I sold my Droid X simply because the update was taking too long. Even with people figuring out the coding to enable the update before OTA, I wanted the official update from Vzw or the like. But I wasn’t getting it. The Droid was cool to play with, but I’m moving on. :)

  • Chad

This is ridiculous, can I get 2.2 on my Motorola RAZR? My RAZR isn’t working right with the hotspot. Also I don’t get apps or 4G working very well. C’mon MOTOROLA!!!!

  • John

I’m not sure this is a big enough deal to get so worked up about. I new when i bought the X that it would be a month or two before the push. It’s been two months and the push is coming this month. Better to have it late, and working, than early and subject to foul-ups. And what kind of life is it in which waiting for a cell-phone update is “hell”?
