Verizon’s Galaxy S and Gem Smartphones Preparing for Launch

With all the hype of the upcoming Droid 2 that Verizon has been building up as of late, two smartphone offerings from Samsung have gone relatively unnoticed. Known also as the Samsung Captivate, and the Samsung Vibrant, Verizon’s offering of the Galaxy S will be touted as the Samsung Fascinate. Why they are choosing all of these different names for essentially the same phone is beyond me, I always was a sucker for standardization, but that’s just me. The main differentiating feature here is the metallic body that adds some shimmery flare to the sleek casing. Otherwise it is the same stuff; the 4″ AMOLED, 1GHz Hummingbird, etc. etc. somewhere around $200.

Next up is a phone that has flown a little more under the radar: the Samsung Gem. This upcoming smartphone will reportedly be running Android with a Touchwiz 3.0 overlay. No word on Froyo. The Gem will be an entry-level offering and will probably launch by the end of the month.

Thats strange why is Samsung not going with the Hummingbird processor like the Captivate and Vibrant? Is this an error?

  • Chris Hoffecker

Yes, it is an error, I am sorry, it’s getting late. Thanks for the correction!

So the Fascinate has a metal back unlike the Vibrant with a plastic back?

Is there more info on a release date for the Fascinate or is it still to be determined.

  • Chris Hoffecker

From what we know so far, that’s correct. Not too much is known on an official release date, but our best bet is somewhere early september so as to not interfere with the Droid 2′s release.

As far as form-factor, the Fascinate is shaping up to be the best Galaxy S so far (unless you need the keyboard of the Epic). A metal back would be most welcomed. Hope to hear some release date rumors soon.

I’d rather have a keyboard than a metal back. But it does have camera flash, which is a no-brainer

The only thing I hope gets changed is the Fascinate comes with more than 2gb of internal memory.
