Three UK updates status on HTC Desire upgrade to Froyo

If you’ll recall, yesterday, we reported on Three’s statement to the public on the upgrade status for their HTC Hero phones for 2.1. According to the statement, their end of the development was complete, and they were simply waiting for the go-ahead from Google. Well, now it seems that they’re giving us an update on their plans for the HTC Desire as well, but this time it’s for the Froyo update.

According to the statement:

Although the HTC Desire update was released for unlocked phones last week, HTC are building a specific version for Three which will take them a few weeks. Once we have this version it will be tested, approved by Google and then rolled out to customers. Although it goes without saying that we will get the update to customers ASAP, it’s likely to be towards the end of summer until we can guarantee a problem free version for our customers.

In other words, it looks like some relatively major testing on the new OS is going on now, and hopefully we’ll see an update for the Desire around September.

I’m pretty annoyed with Three over this. A colleague has an unlocked Desire and has had the 2.2 upgrade already, and is pretty pleased with it.

He’s now been upgraded for 3 weeks, and my locked phone is still on 2.1, and I can’t find any hard dates for a release.

Surely, given that the upgrade for locked phones appears to be at least 3 weeks behind, why not start it 3 weeks before the planned release for unlocked phones so they can be rolled out together.

Unless it is a plan by Three to deliberately stagger deployment to avoid congestion.

TBH, I am considering rooting my phone, but it’s a big step to take if it goes horribly wrong.

Has anybody got any experience of using a rooted Desire with Three?

Yeah still not got my update!!! Come On! I’m looking into rooting it but I haven’t found any info specifically to three locked handsets and don#t want to brick.
