Alrighty, for those of you tired of typing *#*#CHECKIN#*#* you can now breath a sigh of relief as the official release of Froyo for the Motorola Droid is now here. Before you begin, please note:

  • If you are running anything other than stock 2.1, you’ll get an error.
  • If you attempt to apply this update with a custom ROM installed, the update will NOT apply.
  1. Download the file from Google
  2. Rename file to update.zip and place it on the root of your microSD card (root meaning not in any folders)
  3. Turn off your Droid
  4. Boot into recovery mode, by pressing Power + X
  5. As soon as the Triangle with an exclamation point appears, press Volume Up and camera button 1/2 way down at the same time
  6. With the directional pad, select “apply update.zip” and press the gold button.
  7. Reboot and enjoy your frosty Froyo :D

Can anyone do this, or only those who have rooted their phone?

  • Scott Young

    anyone

  • Scott

I got as far as the triangle, pushed volume up and camera, and nothing happened. Help?

  • Scott Young

You saw the /!\ screen then pressed volume up & camera button and then nothing happened?

  • Scott Young

You saw the /!\ screen then pressed volume up & camera button and then nothing?

  • Scott

Yeah; strangest thing. I had to do the whole process several times, but now it finally looks like it’s working.

  • Scott Young

    sounds good :)

  • Miro

Try pushing volume-up and the camera button a couple of times together. I had to push mine two or three times before the menu appeared. Try to push them exactly at the same time (you may want to slide the display back down in order to access the buttons better).

my boot options do not show “apple update.zip” but rather “sdcard:update.zip” when i select that option it fails with the error

E:\failed to open /sdcard/update.zip (No such file or directory)
    E:signature verification failed

is anyone else getting this error?

For those of you who have not yet rec’d the FroYo update – you can watch Flash videos on your android device NOW by downloading Skyfire Mobile Browser.”

  • Stanley

Hey, thank you. So much better than sitting around waiting for the OTA.

  • Sam

This isn’t like a rooted deal is it? Will it slowly start to eat away at my phone or is this the actual OTA update just minus the OTA?

  • Scott Young

Nope, no root required. This is just like you said, OTA update minus the OTA :)

  • Dirk

    … it actually work!
    Cool!

  • Dirk

    …works…

  • Nemo

Looks like it’s working for me.

  • Malloy

Will the OTA still come to the phone later? Will Google still send the OTA and I’ll have the option to do the upgrade or once I do this its all done?

I’m slightly concerned that there will be some minor error with this version and the OTA will include a patch that I’ll regret later….

    Thanks.

  • willwgp

    I’m assuming this isn’t for Droid X?

  • phoenix

I’m also getting this when I try to apply the update:

    E:signature verification failed

    Anyone else?

  • phoenix

Ah – got it taken care of. Needed to download the package directly on the phone and then rename it, as opposed to downloading it directly and then copying it to the phone. All’s well and froyo-y now!

  • josh

k i downloaded straight on phone i went to the website on phone and downloaded like that and it just says what everybody else is getting just a bunch of error messages. whats up with that can any one HELP

  • josh

nevermind i’m dumb i didn’t read the steps very well when you download off of phone it puts it in a download folder and the steps say the zip file can’t be in any folder so i got it now

  • willwgp

It’s all good buddy! Like it said, just put it in root, rename it, and restart phone :)

Or just wait til OTA, which … I actually think I’ll end up doing for Droid X. I did root my phone but … knowing I’m holding a $500 something device in my hand, just doesn’t give me any reason to void the warranty … which I just did … lol …

  • mman

worked… now lets go get flash

  • troubleshoot

Hmm, its in the root directory and still wont work. its not in another file or anything. Any Advice?

  • jessica

  • RedStar

    Works! Thank you!

  • Steven

yooo ppl if you download it straight to your computer then put it on your phone dnt rename it to update.zip u wanna put it in root like dude said but rename it to update…doo the system reboot thingy and follow ol boys instructions up top…if you name it to update.zip its actually telling the phone update.zip.zip the file is already a zip folder….sry had to say something

  • andy

My wife spent two hrs downloading this shit and nothing has changed! Still have question marks. Waste of time.

  • steve

I can’t get through the first step. My download management screen pops up, as does the download, but says download not supported. It doesn’t even try to download.

This might be a crazy question but how do you find the root directory for the droid incredible. For those that don’t know Froyo is a mobile platform.
