A software company called Spider Labs released a tool for attacking Android based smart phones, at this year’s Defcon Hacker’s Convention in Las Vegas. “It wasn’t difficult to build,” said Nicholas Percoco, “There are people who are much more motivated to do these things than we are,”
The conference attracts thousands of participants each year and is totally anonymous to attend. No names are required and the $140 entrance fee is paid in cash at the door. Exhibitors like Spider Labs release code such to the attendees, such as this root kit that can steal information without the owner ever knowing, to pressure manufactures to fix flaws in their products.
The exploit tests were conducted on the HTC Desire and HTC Legend but it is said to be able to work on any Android phone. HTC and Google have not released any comments but we hope they got the message loud and clear.
