O2 UK have begun trialling 4G in the UK. Using a standard Dell laptop and a samsung 4G broadband dongle, speeds of 80mbps were achieved at peak performance, and this while demonstrating from a coffee shop in a shopping centre.

During the demo, the page load times were compared to Broadband loading speeds of approx 15 seconds, and over 4G pages loaded in 1 second. At the O2 headquarters, the 4G signal was routed through WiFi to simulate 4G speeds on a mobile phone, with super fast results.

O2 will also begin a low band 4G trial in late august, this should demonstrate that the 4G signal can penetrate further, giving a larger cell footprint from the towers. This could mean that hard to reach locations that have not experienced broadband could instead enjoy 4G connectivity and speeds.
