There has been a lot of news concerning Baidu lately as the stories unfolded about Google’s presence in China – and all the firewall workarounds the search giant employed to keep itself uncensored. Baidu is one of Google’s main competitors as a search engine in China, but now it looks like they’re ready to take on another aspect of Google’s market – smartphones.

According to All Things Digital, Baidu has been going behind enemy lines, so to speak, and trying to convince handset manufacturers to make their searches more prevalent than Google’s in upcoming Android handsets. While Android handsets only make up 0.4% of the 7.5 million smartphones sold in the last 3 months of 2009, the numbers in the first half of this year have surely been growing.

As smartphones become more and more popular, the search engine market grows right alongside them, making it easy to see why Baidu would love to have a piece of Google’s search pie.
