O2 UK Testing LTE Across London, Using Dongles To Start

If you’re living in the UK  you’ve got one more thing to smile about as O2 is looking to test out an LTE network of their own for its customers.  The carrier is looking to begin trials across London over the next nine months at which time O2 will give consumers and business folk access to tons of services.  Initially, 25 sites will be rolled out covering a span of 40 square kilometers between now and the summer of 2012.  The company has strategically chosen key areas in the city to focus on.  Initially, no handsets will be offered, but instead customers will experience speeds on USB dongles at potentially 100 Mbps.

“Today’s launch of the UK’s first 4G London trial network demonstrates our commitment to delivering 4G to our customers at the earliest opportunity. The work we are doing now will lay the foundations for our commercial 4G network when it launches in the UK.”

The statement above was made by Ronan Dunne, CEO of Telefónica UK (O2) as a promise to commit to LTE going forward and in a timely manner.  Here’s to hoping O2 can deploy the technology in a reasonable amount of time in keeping with the industry and that consumers can begin experiencing the blazing speeds of LTE on a mobile handset soon.
