Eclair now has over 55% of Android share

Over at the Android Developer website, there’s an updated pie graph (pie, eclair… I’m getting hungry) that shows Android 2.1 taking up 55.5% of Android platforms on mobile devices. Donut (1.6) is falling in at 22.1%, followed in third place by Cupcake (1.5) at 18.9%. Froyo, or 2.2, is taking up only 3.3% of the platform share.

As you can see, the fragmentation still exists in a large way, but hopefully this is proof of a move toward gathering all that fragmentation up and coming up with a more universal solution for Android users.

What version of Android are you running? Let us know in the comments!

HTC Tattoo, and HTC won’t give any updates at all for it.. so either custom ROM without camera and FM radio or stay at 1.6 for ever

Many of the manufacturers have said that 2.1 will be the last upgrade for many of the older phones. So many of those will not get upgraded. So in future we might see more fragmentation not less.
I think that is wrong all android phones should at least be updated to 2.2 as with the new compiler some of the old phones would run better than they do with 1.6 or 2.1.

The reason there are still so many running 1.5 is due in large part to the British carriers taking their merry time fiddling around with small bits of code they wish to embed in the upgrade to 2.1 for HTC Hero owners. Once this happens the number of phones running 1.5 will diminish to less than run 1.6. I am still waiting with 1.5 on my Hero, now about a month since unbranded Hero’s got their eclair….

I have the HTS Desire with Android 2.1 and Sense UI.
I want to move to Froyo but assume that it would mean losing Sense UI, is that a bad thing?
There is a lot of confusing info about whether HTC will release 2.2 for the Desire. Will it only be available for those that bought it through the Telco (Telstra in AUS)? I didn’t, but I don’t think I should be penalised.
