When the Evo launched on Sprint, it premiered Qik video chat as one of its flagship services, and Qik announced that it would allow use of the “premium” service free of charge until, well, today.
Those of you who have followed the news, or who own an Evo, are probably aware that there were issues. The Qik servers weren’t prepared for the load, saying that 20x the people they expected were trying to use the service at once, and they were unable to support the weight. Users were seeing problems connecting, and eventually the app was pulled from the market until such time as Qik said they were ready to go again.
Given the problems that were encountered, Qik announced today that they will be extending the use of their premium service free of charge through the end of September.
Earlier in the day we ran into a snag with Qik for HTC EVO 4G not being visible in the Android Market from the HTC EVO 4G devices – even though it was published to the market. Hats off to our great partner Google. Their Android team jumped in, found the issue and came up with a workaround that enabled us to at least get the new Qik Video client out to our users.
We had an unprecedented 20X the amount of workload on our servers. As a result, you were seeing issues connecting to our service on and off. So, our team is now out provisioning more capacity and we expect to have this in control shortly. We feel bad that not all of you got a chance to experience the new Qik Video today and truly appreciate your patience. Rest assured we are not going to rest till this is humming and you are able to video chat with your friends and loved ones.
Great news for those of you who haven’t had a chance to adequately test this service, you’ve got another 2.5 months to try it out. And, for those of you who don’t have your Evo yet, you’ll still get a crack at it.
