Well, here’s a post I never thought I’d write. In the midst of all the rumors and debunking floating around, a tipster over at TechnoBuffalo spilled the beans regarding the popular Blackberry Messenger application hitting Android and revealed some inside info along with a couple of shots of the app in action. In the wake of some recent pics being debunked, how can we trust the info this time you say? Well, he’s a RIM employee. Here’s what he had to say:
I work for RIM and I was shown the latest version of bbm for android. I ran the app on the blackberry android dev phone.( The dev phone feels very cheap and unstable and the front four buttons have just been stuck on. I don’t believe this phone will ever be released to the public.) The latest version certainly looks better than the previous version.
In addition to the statement and in an effort to gain some credibility, the tipster also provided some convincing screen shots of the application on an Android test unit, hence the ugly as hell stuck-on nav buttons. It’s always a possibility that these can be photo shopped so don’t get your hopes up just yet. According to the tipster, it’s possible that RIM may show the application off in the up coming DevCon show hitting San Fran Oct 18th-20th. Here’s a thought for you; if one of the only major reasons people are still sticking with a Blackberry or any RIM device these days is for their messenger application, what in the world is going to happen to the company and sales when you can now have it on any killer Android device? Furthermore, to add insult to injury, the tipster says they are even considering an application for iOS. RIM, if you want to take your only bargaining chip and toss it, be my guest. What’s your take on this? Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments below.
