Symbian losing race in mobile space, says Gartner

According to Nick Jones of Gartner, Symbian may be “rearranging chairs on the Titanic” in terms of their market share. He says that, while Symbian is still the worldwide leader in the mobile space, they are losing ground quickly to competitors like Android and iOS. He goes on to state that Symbian is running farther off-course from consumer demand with things like WiFi Direct and audio policy packages. We have seen how far Android has come in the mobile race for market share in the recent months, but will Symbian be able to keep it’s lead, or is this the dawn of their downfall? If things go the way Jones thinks, we may end up seeing some “skunkworks projects”, or even branding redesign contests coming from Symbian in attempts to keep the platform in it’s current #1 pot.

I’m sorry, but I’m getting very tired of stories on this site that have NOTHING to do with Android, like the endless “iPhone 4 problems blah blah blah” posts from when it came out. I don’t care about Symbian, or the iPhone, or Palm, etc. I care about Android. I know I’m only one reader, but this is one reader that you’re going to lose if you don’t focus on Android more. Quit being such fanboys and try being journalists and report on content specific to what this website is supposed to be about, or change the name from “Talk Android” to “Talk Mobile” or something.

Who do you think Symbian is losing marketshare to? The answer would be Android. :)

And out of 446 articles that we’ve posted under new management, there have been 7 pure “iphone” articles that didn’t have much to say about Android.

7/446 = 1.5% which is pretty far from “endless” IMO ;)

In other obvious news, DOS has seen widespread decline in use.

I wish nokia would adopt android instead of Symbian, Maemo and Meego. It’s as if they are trying not to be relevant.

Charlie W, fanboys??? Do you know what that term means? Who are fanboys here?

Obviously I was exaggerating, LiteralNet. My point is that for a site that’s called “Talk Android”, there should be 0 stories about Apple, not 7, not 1. If the editors here want to cover other mobile platforms, that is their prerogative, but then they should change the name of the site.

@Scott, I imagine that Symbian is loosing share to ALL of the other mobile platforms, not just Android. Which makes this a general mobile platform story, not an Android story.

@Jan, yes I know what a Fanboy is. I admit that comment, and perhaps my entire post, was made a bit too hastily and in anger. My problem is that I just can’t seem to find an Android blog that can’t go without bashing the iPhone at every opportunity, seemingly sometimes out of some smug superiority (and sometimes inferiority) complex. I just want an Android blog that ONLY talks about Android, and I just can’t find it. This article just struck that nerve.

So I apologize for my outburst and my tone, but I’m afraid my point still stands. And I am aware that I am one person out of I’m sure thousands whose opinion isn’t worth a damn, so I’ll just shut up now and keep looking for my White Whale.

@Rob: I still use the cmd prompt from time to time :O

@CW: I’m sorry that out of every ~63 news posts, we post one story about a competitor. And besides, when somebody asks you why XXX android phone is better than an iPhone or some Blackberry or nokia or w/e. it’s nice to know a little about the problems on THOSE phones instead of just spouting about how great Android is

  • Charlie W.

@Scott – No need to apologize. Like I said, it’s just a matter of this site not fitting my specific wants. I already get this general information from all the other blogs I read. I just want to find an Android niche blog that says that if their readers want coverage of more brands or OS’s, then they can go elsewhere.

And you know what’s funny? As it turns out, I might have an issue with the wrong people. I follow @TalkAndroid on Twitter, and that’s where I’m seeing a lot of these non-Android related posts, like the iPhone4/Consumer Reports story that was linked to last night. But it seems that the blog itself might not be covering these posts. So, I’m going to try unfollowing @TalkAndroid on Twitter and paying more attention to the RSS feed of the blog itself. Maybe that will be better for me.
