Square Enix Announces Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy: Legends, And More Coming To Android

Being a huge RGP fan myself, this is some awesome news and a step in the right direction for mobile gaming in my opinion. Square Enix over at the Tokyo Game Show has been dropping a handful of title names that will be coming to Android. First up, Final Fantasy I will be coming in 2012 under the name Final Fantasy: Legends. There isn’t a lot of details at the moment on this game other than the screenshot above, but let’s cross our fingers that this won’t be a Japan only release.

Next up is one of my favorite classic RPGs and possibly one of the best of all time, Chrono Trigger. This little jem hit the Super Nintendo system in 1995 and was created by what Square dubbed as their “Dream Team”. Since then it’s hit a number of different platforms and most recently to the Wii virtual console. Let’s hope though that this is not just a port with joystick controls on screen, but also a touch experience within the battle modes.

One last bit of news is that Square Enix will be launching their own Android Marketplace in Japan. This is coming later this year and includes titles like Final Fantasy I and II, Chaos Rings, and Crystal Defenders. Let’s hope to see this venture outside of Japan as well. Anyone else excited? Let’s just hope this is a step in the right direction for more original and great RPG titles to hid Android. If anyone can make that happen, it’s Square Enix.

What, no mention of the legendary Final Fantasy VII?

An how about native support for Sony Ericsson’s Xperia PLAY (“PlayStation phone”)? Are we going to see this?

Let’s just hope that Square Enix think to add support for installation to removeable storage this time ’round, because Imaginary Range ( https://market.android.com/details?id=com.squareenix.android.imaginaryrange ) is just too big for most smartphones…

I’m dying to see a re-release of VII, but it needs to be on an epic scale and done right. Would be cool to play the original version again on mobile though optimized for touchscreens.

awesomeeeeeee, I love my DS, but think carting around a huge bulky gamesystem that only gives me 2 hours of battery is too much of a hassle.. so if i can get it on my phone that’s awesome

Whilst it doesn’t last forever, the usasge times on my Xperia PLAY (“PlayStation phone”) are surprisingly impressive… Under “real world cicrumstances” (i.e. brightness at 100%, sound at 100% via the speakers, bluetooth turned-on), I can get up to 4-5-ish hours of gameplay before my device starts whinging!

Tweak the settings and it would only be natural to expect another hour or two of usage times…

I really miss playing Chrono Trigger and the entire concept of playing these oldies in portable systems is brilliant! Great way to make these games a big hit again. As for FFVII, I would really prefer a decent remake than have on android. And guess what? I just read about Square’s intentions of remaking FFX…. Go figure…

@Aiden – GET OUT?!?!? I LOVED FF X almost as much as VII! Im going to have to google that one. Thanks for the tip. I agree with you as id prefer and HD remake done right if they bring VII back, but with all the great mini-games and all that im sure it will take a long time.
