Sony Ericsson says Xperia Play is “meeting expectations”

Despite price drops, some would say the Xperia Play wasn’t the hit it should have been. In spite of this, Sony Ericsson said that their gaming phone is “meeting expectations”. We’ve also seen the Play showing up in different color flavors recently as well. Sony Ericsson is hoping for a big sales bang for the device this holiday season.

How can it compete with all the dual-core power goodness coming this year you ask? Well, Sony Erricsson has this to say:

“When you go into things like dual core versus single core, what a lot of people don’t understand or appreciate is the actual benchmarking and the ability of a device to do what they do, dual core doesn’t mean it’s faster. This is PlayStation Certified, and it’s been proven by all of the discussions of a very technical nature we’re having with publishers”

Well Ericsson you’re right, the masses don’t understand you can make software run faster on a slower processor. It makes me think of the PlayStation consoles (or any game console for that matter) where they games get better graphically while the hardware stays the same. Or how about PCs getting faster and faster, but Windows just became more of a resource hog? I’d like to see Sony do well in the Android market, so hopefully as they continue to pump out games things will work out. I think there is a place in the market for this device, don’t you?

I would love a phone with a gamepad (I HATE touchscreen control pads). Sadly, the Xperia Play was neither dual-core or LTE, so it just wasn’t the phone for me.

I don’t care for old games and believe most people share this point of view. The casual just don’t care and the hardcore don’t need to go back so much. My two cents.

But that’s what people don’t understand Jason, although the Xperia PLAY (“PlayStation phone”) may not be a dual-core smartphone, it still manages to handle its own and offers a gaming experience on-par with the Sony PlayStation/PSOne… Certain games even come awfully close to Sony PlayStation 2 quality!

Further to this, it is common knowledge that internally, Sony Ericsson have managed to get the Sony PSP (PlayStation Portable) versions of LittleBigPlanet, God of War and Invizimals running on the Xperia PLAY!

No one is denying that dual-core processors are indeed powerful, but as was pointed out above, with careful programming, one can obtain the same or similar results with a single-core processor.

As for LTE, I struggle to see how this would benefit a smartphone, especially when you consider that even the Sony PlayStation 3 can play games online relatively well over a “3.5G” connection…

What do you mean by “old games”, odd?

Yes there are the PlayStation/PSOne games on the Xperia PLAY, but the vast majority of games made available for the Xperia PLAY are brand-spanking new… Disappointingly (at least in my opinion), there have been just nine PlayStation/PSOne games made available since launch, and Sony Ericsson has made no indication that more are on their way anytime soon.
