If you have even the slightest idea as to what rooting your Android device means, or what a custom ROM is, then I can bet you probably know what CyanogenMod is. CyanogenMod is a fully modified version of Google’s Android OS. This custom ROM can be flashed to a very long list of devices, and is hands down one of the most popular custom ROM’s available today.
We’ve all been hearing and reading about the latest news of Steve Kondik (cyanogen) being hired by Samsung. And I don’t blame Samsung for wanting to get their hands on the proven skills of the founder of CyanogenMod. So due to this latest development, there looks to be plenty of rumors and much speculation as to the fate of CyanogenMod.
This is where Keyan Mobli (kmods) comes in.
He delivers us a bit of reassurance as to where CyanogenMod is headed, and also does his best to turn off the rumor mill. He points out in his blog post that many feel that CyanogenMod will be changing its core philosophy, or that the project has been sold. Right away kmobs tells us this is in no way true.
Just like any of us that take full advantage of the work these guys do, they have a life outside CyanogenMod that they have to tend to. The work they do on this amazing custom ROM is done for free, and they work hard on it, but at the same time have to take care of their other responsibilities. He does acknowledge that the work has slowed down some on CyanogenMod due to recent happenings. Each of these guys that have the job of approving the changes to CM do so as they have the time. Continuing on, kmobs goes on to mention a couple other of the well knows names in the Android community such as Chris Soyars, who is now working for Grooveshark, a streaming internet radio service, Koush who we know works constantly on ClockworkMod recovery, is now also working on a project called DeskSMS that I use regularly and would recommend to anyone using an Android phone and Chrome browse. Kmobs also mentions school is starting back for him, so of course he’ll be quite busy.
Lastly, he points out that there are over 40 developers invloved in CyanogenMod development, and are working around the clock to bring us those ‘nightlies’ we love to flash, just so we can see what’s new and possibly coming to the next release candidate. All these guys ask is that we sit tight and let them handle their business, and once things calm you’ll see much more activity from Cyanogen and the rest of the guys! One last update on the state of CyanogenMod is given to us from kmobs when he says the following:
On top of all of the above, we are currently in a soft feature-freeze for another 7.1 RC. (You can call it a feature slushie if you like) Because of this, we are reluctant to approve new features that may prove problematic for certain devices for the sake of the stability of the entire tree.
So stick around, let the CyanogenMod team do the work they were meant to do. Keep up the support, and extend your thanks for all the hours of hard work that was put in by each and everyone of these developers.
