Despite strong(ish) sales it appears that the Nexus One, Google’s flagship phone, is not getting a brother. The news comes from Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who cites the fact that the Nexus One did it’s job of helping to push the Android platform, and that a second Nexus is not necessary. He also claims that not having to launch a Nexus Two is a victory for Google, not a setback.
“The idea a year and a half ago was to do the Nexus One to try to move the phone platform hardware business forward. It clearly did. It was so successful, we didn’t have to do a second one. We would view that as positive but people criticised us heavily for that. I called up the board and said: ‘Ok, it worked. Congratulations – we’re stopping’. We like that flexibility, we think that flexibility is characteristic of nimbleness at our scale.”
Google had been planning the launch the Nexus One on Verizon, but put a stop on those plans and instead directed Verizon customers to buy the HTC Incredible. So for now, no Nexus Two, but you never know what Google will do further down the road.
