Skype Lite For Android Announced
News from CES 2009 is that Skype are set announce the release of Skype Lite for the Android platform and other Java-enabled handsets.
We have it on good authority that the Skype Lite software will be uploaded to the Android Market on Thursday morning although it is not known how long it will take to appear available for download.
Skype Lite will also be available on Thursday to around 100 other handset models including Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Nokia, LG, and Samsung phones.
Stay tuned for more details as soon as we get them!
Edit: Skype Lite is now available to download from the Android Market, although on closer inspection it appears that the application uses network call allowances for the Skype calls. The data plan is used for messaging only.

Where do we find the details of how this works?
Does it use air time minutes? Can the number be one of the Fav5? Does it work over 3G/Wi-Fi?
What’s the deal here?

You can go to help section on the app itself — everything is explained there. Or you can also read here: http://www.skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/mobile/

It’s like pennytalk or iskoot when making calls. It charges local rates (available in certain countries, of which you can choose one) to call some number and then you are forwarded on at skype rates.
So if you live in the US and have an unlimited calling plan you can call skype-to-skype for ‘free’ but its probably easier too just dial the person anyway.
Only comes in hand if the person is outside the US and you can call their number from withing your bundled minutes.
If you don’t live in one of the countries they list then this is USELESS as a calling agent. Its basically a skype chat client.
