Android 3.2 Honeycomb Update For Acer Iconia Tab A500 Delayed Until August 25th

According to Acer’s Malaysian Facebook page, Acer Iconia Tab A500 owners will receive an Android 3.2 OTA update on August 25th due to a delay from Google regarding “poicy changes”. Even with the delay, this new update will be less than two months after the tablet’s Android 3.1 release.

Acer posted this to it’s wall:

“Dear Fans, due to some policy changes from Google where Acer has to comply, the A500 Honeycomb 3.2 OTA update will be postponed to 25th August, we apologize for the disappointments and upsets but we will be bringing the final and stable update to all of our A500 fans asap! Please be patient guys”

Any Acer Iconia Tab A500 users out there chomping at the bit for some Honeycomb? Leave us a comment below!

Not sure I like the idea this will be the ” final and stable update “. Would prefer to see the A500 supported with OS updates for 1 yr min but 2 yrs ideal.

This is the final update for Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich is due to launch in the 4th quarter. This is the unifying os for all Android devices. Russ you will still get updates, just not for Honeycomb.

I hope this version corrects big bugs from 3.1
    - charging indicator shows charging is ongoing almost allways. And I bet I don’t have charger blugged. Tablet does not know when battery is empty.
    - My tablet is sometimes (often) very very slow. Because of this problem I need to boot my tablet daily. This is the bug why I have been thinking to sell this out and buy an iPad.

I was thinking that Google does not have this kind of basic problems.

@Chris, will our Acer Iconia’s be updated to the new OS or will we be stuck with the honeycomb?

  • Oz Batcheller

I am happy that the update is coming out and it promises to fix some USB and other bugs. Quick question: Is anyone CERTAIN that this update takes care of DRM copyright restrictions with the Acer AND THAT WE WILL FINALLY BE ABLE TO STREAM NETFLIX WITHOUT HACKING. Thanks

    Here is the latest

“We would like to inform you in advance that we have received communications that the patch will not be out on this date. We know you are disappointed and angry, and we truly apologize. We are equally disappointed and hope to resolve this issue as soon as possible. We do not want to promise another date as this matter is beyond our control.”

  • Paul

Told you I had a feeling that this update wouldn’t come through.

Makes me want to buy an iPad now. This is crazy! I don’t have the problems everyone else has had, but most tabs have already got the 3.2 update! Come on Acer, S**t or get off the pot!

well, I got the 3.2 HC update this morning. It is a 350Mbyte download.
Whereas for updating to HC 3.1 I had to do an annoying factory reset, for the HC 3.2 update it just went in forst time.

My Acer A500 has jitters whenh I play 1080p MP4 videos, either with or without the HDMI connection. I hoped that 3.2 might resolve this but it didn’t. Does anyone else get the jitters in 1080p?

    Thanks

After getting 3.1 this past Friday… I also got the 3.2 update this past weekend.. went fine… I really love the unit so far.. only owned it for a week but I compared it to an iPad (also own) – I actually do prefer the Acer.. granted there are a few things on the iPad which work a little better (battery).. but no deal breakers.. being able to plug in usb, plugging into my desktop and drag and drop files to and from the unit without being attached to iTunes is great.. that’s what I needed. I’m sure I’m one of many people who own multiple external hard drives with photos, movies, music etc..

Surfing online.. not a prob.. I use the default browser and dolphin.. both are just fine.. I prefer the desktop view vs the ‘tablet’ view (you can change in the settings of each browser).

Regarding the Movie playback. I got MX Video Player from the market and the codec pack.. don’t seem to have any problems thus far. avi, mp4 etc.. plays anything.. no freezing / choppy playback etc. Anyone having video probs.. try MX Video Player… and get the right codec (separate download).

I also streamed Youtube, Dailmotion, CNN and a few others without issue… Watch some sports on Veetle (streaming site) without issue… plug into Television and played without issue.

The only thing I am disappointed in is Skype — no video apparantly.. haven’t really tested it.. but that’s what all are saying on the Skype chat groups.. if they fix this.. then this would be perfect.

Right now.. I can say my unit is ‘fine tuned’.. working smoothly. One tip I can mention.. if you download a lot of apps or have the unit running for say 8 hours or so and it becomes ‘boggy’… turn on and off .. do a reset (you won’t loose anything)… Just something I noticed.. but could have just been me using it (opening a lot of tabs, running movies, music, games etc)..

Overall.. great unit for the price.. and having the IO ports makes a huge diffence to guys who own many external hard drives :)
