Android ‘Cupcake’ Update G1 Onscreen Keyboard Video

Last week saw Google announce the new 'Cupcake' update that will be heading to G1 handsets in early 2009. The Android update will bring added functionality to the G1 device including the ability to include an onscreen keyboard display, along with video recording and stereo bluetooth support.

The addition of an onscreen keyboard display will allow G1 users to input text without the need for the slideout physical keyboard.

Here's a recently discovered video that shows the new onscreen keyboard feature running on the G1 handset.

  1. That’s not the keyboard that’s coming in the ‘cupcake’ update… Looks neat though, just not what you’ve presented it as being :(

  2. I complied the updates and ran it through the emulator, and that look to be the same keyboard that is in the update as of right now. Whether or not T-Mobile or Google writes a different one to use I can’t be sure. Anyway that keyboard is pretty nifty as is.

  3. yeah,
thats def. not the cupcake update.
i mean shouldn’t the keys turn orange when you touch them. after all, everything else that you can touch on android g-1 is usually highlighted orange upon touching.

  4. I see what your saying that all the current buttons and stuff turn orange when touched. But the keyboard that is in the Cupcake code as of last week in fact does not turn orange when pressed. It turns a light gray, shows you the key being pressed in a box above the key and finally prints the key that was pressed.

The video is in fact the real thing as of what is in the code today.

If anyone would like the images to run through the emulator to play with the Cupcake changes, feel free to email me and I will give you a link to download them at and tell you how to put it on the emulator.

  5. Oops, forgot that my email address isn’t published. Feel free to email me here at kingrst@gmail.com if you would like the images.

  6. Ok so whens this download going to be released and is it going to be an ota deal or does anybody know

  7. The update that T-Mobile/Google releases will be an OTA update.

I was just curious as to what they have in store for updates so I downloaded and compiled an emulator version.

  8. How do I get the cupcake update ?? I still haven’t recive it in my phone .. plz some help me I want the cupcake update.

Ok so I d/loaded an app that’s called chompsms and it has an on screen keyboard which I find very useful! And I can’t wait to get ahold of my cupcake. :) I wish the G1 had themes to change. I love pink!

  11. I am getting sick and tired of seeing people complain about not getting the cupcake update yet when I visit the android market on my G1..

Its going to be super useful when it comes out.. And I can’t wait but.. * sigh * Just wait for it people!

Also.. This demo looks quite a bit like the ChompSMS applications keyboard, it would be nice if they would use a vertical keyboard with larger buttons.. I have found the horozontal (as pictured above) is kinda hard to use.

Can’t wait for that video update!

  12. The 2nd of two rumored cupcake release dates have passed and depression is setting in. It seems we must resort to prayer and so…

“In the name of the father/fabricator (HTC) and of the son/service (T-mobile) and of the holy ghost (Google)amen.
Our father (Android) who are in heaven (Online) hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come on earth (in handsets) as it is in heaven (online). Give us this day our daily bread (cupcake) and forgive us our trespasses (being early adopters) as we forgive those who trespass against us (AT&T, Apple and Iphone users).
Lead us not into temptation (lusting for flash, video and stereo bluethooth), world (internet) without end amen.”

Let “Cupcake” fall from heaven like “Manna” to sustain us as we cross the desert looking for the holy land, peopled by other Android users.

  13. That was beautiful Trev! I can’t wait to see what other cool things cupcake was to offer. But I have a question, like really off topic. Umm idk how to send files through bluetooth. Like if I wanna send a pic there is to option like “send via bluetoothK or atleast I don’t think so. :( HELP!?

    thanks !! very helpful post!

  15. My main issue with the G1 keyboard is the lack of ability to type txt and email via the virtual keyboard. The thing I can’t understand is this. I owned the Tmobile MDA. They are both HTC phones. They both have touch sensitive screens and pullout keyboards. BUT despite being years older and supposedly behind the G1 in technology the Tmobile MDA has a Virtual Keyboard. So its obvious they have the ability to put it on their phones why not incorporate that technology in the G1.
