T-Mobile will start charging for overages on 200MB plans

The above image shows us that T-Mobile is making a change with the 200MB data plan in that they will no longer throttle when a customer goes over the limit, but instead charge for overages. This is a complete change in T-Mobile’s data policy of never charging for overages. This is the lowest data plan, but you have to wonder what lies ahead.

T-Mobile is doing this “in order to remain competitive.” As of August 13, customers on the plan will be grandfathered, but all others will now be charged .10cents per MB over the 200MB limit. The good news is there is a limit on the overcharge, and that is $30 if you are the Classic Plans or $35 on the Value Plans. Customers will receive a warning message when they have hit 180MB and 200MB.

For now there are no other changes to the higher data offerings, but time will tell. Let this be a warning that something might be looming.

Why did bandwidth all of a sudden become more expensive? A couple years ago I had unlimited cable modem bandwidth at home and unlimited data on my phone. Now, they are both limited.

Have bits become harder to generate these days? Did one of the ingredients in baking up a big batch of bits come from an animal that went extinct?
