Android Update 2009 – Video Recording, Stereo Bluetooth, Onscreen Keyboard And More
Google have today published a roadmap for the new 'Cupcake' development branch of the Android platform. The roadmap details a whole list of bug fixes and new features that will be made available to G1 owners in January 2009.
“The cupcake branch will be merged into the master branch… Due to the United States’ holiday season, though, this may not be finished until early January.”
The new update will include the ability to record video, support for stereo Bluetooth, onscreen keyboard functionality and more.
Key features include:
- Option to save attachments and pictures from text messages
- Option to view what applications and processes are running
- Updated Webkit browser
- the ability to copy and paste text within the browser by holding the SHIFT key and sliding your finger across the text you want to copy
- Ability to search for text within the browser using a FIND feature
- New SquirrelFish JavaScript engine
- New kernel based on Linux 2.6.27
- Dial pad can no longer be single tapped open but needs a finger slide motion
- Video thumbnails and playback functionality
- Stereo Bluetooth support
- Ability to have an onscreen keyboard for typing

So any idea if the T-Mobile G1 hardware can support Stereo Bluetooth?

Sidekick LX shipped without stereo bluetooth and then it was added in a patch. This seems to be pretty common, so I’d say that yes this list means the G1 will do stereo bluetooth (I always assumed it would be patched in).

Things like Stereo Bluetooth (A2DP) is really just a profile. It was missing from the Android due to an incomplete bluetooth stack.
So to answer the question yes, it can and it will.
This news is fantastic there next update contains so many great features(many that it should’ve shipped with but this is why its open source eh?).

Generally updates are done over the air whether you are on Edge, GPRS, 3G, or Wifi. Obviously the slower networks will take longer to get the update just due to the speed of the network.

I seen it in the android market. Somebody posted a comment in one of the new apps. Saying that the video player was sweet. Dunno if he was talking shit or not. But where would cup cake be. In the market?

The Android updates will be sent via OTA (Over The Air). I have hard about the market comments and they seem to be just people pulling your leg.

Well, it definitely did NOT come out today. I saw the same comments about people saying they have the cupcake update. Either way, I’m pretty sure T-Mobile will send us a text message or different form of alert telling us it’s time to upgrade. I wish they’d put an upgrade area in the phone somewheres, though.

well, word in the android community spreads pretty quickly, it would be nice if there was a forum application with a rating system on the g1. but i must say, if cupcake had already been released there wouldnt be this much speculation, i had an unofficial conversation with a tmo rep, he said that the rumors are crap, but he also said that android is in the process of packaging cupcake for release on tmo’s frequency. this means very VERY soon

i’ve been reading everything people have been posting across the web .. i was one of the people who pre-ordered the G1 from day one .. if this update is supposedly coming to me first, it’s not here yet .. what i keep reading is the update is being delivered in batches based on when you got your G1 .. that said .. anyone who did NOT pre-order the G1 may not receive the update til the end of the month

i was informed that the release for cupcake was Jan 15th and Jan 22 as a means to control the amount of over the air downloads but it may be that the 22nd is the official release and the 15th is just for developers and test groups

I’ve had my G1 since mid November and couldn’t think of any handset I’d want other than the G1. It’s fun to see a simi basic handset that HTC and Google built slowly develope into the iPhones rival. The fact that they were limited on time and could not complete the software like they wanted makes it fun to anticipate updates and the cool new features. It’s like baking a cupcake with mystery dough and tasting the new flavors when it’s finally done. As long as the G1 has avid supporters and developers, i’ll keep on usin’ it.

I don’t know why you’re all buggin out for cupcake. I mean I had this phone ever since it came out and I was havin fun with it, and when I heard about this update I thoughtd it’d be nice, but like everything else in this world, we must wait until thee cupcake is perfected. I really don’t care whether this update comes or not because the phone is already great, it’d be great to have the cupcake upgrade but its not worth going crazy for.

One of my friends from school claims he has the cupcake update and my teacher said she saw it. But i highly doubt it. ive heard only a selected few were gonna get them so the network doesnt freeze up from too many ppl downloading it.. So maybe it is Jan 22nd.. we can only pray =D..

I want the update!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i want stereo bluetooth. That is the only thing that has really frustrated me about my G1. I have bluetooth headphones for working out and can stream via bluetooth to my car stereo. I got really used to it with my blackberry.
That update alone will make me love my phone even more.

I called T-Mobile today to pay my bill and see if I could get anything out of them…Spoke to a rep who said he went to a “focus group” meeting for the G1 a week ago and that the cupcake software update will be released in the next week or two. We also talked about the flash player, extended battery life, and virtual keyboard. He couldn’t confirm any of the new features but did say that this is NOT a rumor and it is coming soon.

Listen.i was talking to a tmobile representative the other day..and he said that there no precise date on the release.. BUT!!!..he said he had recieved a letter explaining the upgrades that would be included in the update…and so far everything is correct!!..he said..that around the end of january…and maybe even the begingin of Feb..that updates would be released…so we can only wait..he told me its not a myth..its real…the only myth is the lies ppl are spreading about wrong dates..getting pppl hyped up for no reason..juss wait..be patient..and it will come!! young skywalker…lmao..ugg..i had 2 add dat in to get a little tension off =P

TAN, i have bad news for you. the Rc33 update isnt the same as the cupcake update. None of that is a lie. developers are working on the cupcake update right now. so i believe that you are wrong. i have the rc33 update as well, we will all have to wait longer for the cupcake update, which includes video recording, onscreen keyboard and stereo bluetooth.

@Tan, None of it is really a lie, However the g1 will more then likely see some of the cupcake updates. What I don’t know.
But I just know the g1 tech said at this point they are more focus on the G2, In my eyes and my pocket I really think that is pretty screwed up, but hey what can we do about it ?

Well they are coming out with a G2, That is for sure, At the same time like I have said in my other post.
Most of the cupcake updates will most likely turn up on the G2.
I am not saying the G1 won’t see any of the cupcake update. either way anything that comes up on a G2 will be able to put on a G1, it might take a little bit of time but all trust me.
The guys over at XDA always find there way around things.

@Jenny, there is a HUGE difference between Net Lango, and what this person is typing…And Tmo techs/Rep are not at liberty to put out any information other then that is posted by Tmo on their site.
Bottom line here guys/girls, Lets say that the Parts of the Cupcake update don’t hit the G1 and the G2 has it all….
example: The HTC 8125 was lacking a ton of features, and never really got any updates, How ever the newer models, HTC Touch and HTC touch Pro, all have the features that why mobile users would moan about not having.
But guess what almost every new feature that came on the newer HTC phones can be put into the UI of the older 8125.
So once again even if we don’t see “Cupcake” on the G1 with a little bit of common since, and knowing how to read and comprehend instructions, you can have all the new features on the older phone in this case the G1. Thanks to the great people who take their time and Dev. the software to work.
I am done trying to make a point here as it seems pointless, but when all of you go buy the G2 not long after just buying the G1 just for a few features, I will not have spent anything but 5mins on my G1 and have all the same features!

@Dave man you can’t go around calling people stupid, saying there fact and thought are wrong and your information is the only right one. This is a forum if you have information that can help other G1 USER THEN POST THE COMMMENT, if other people have there own thought then let them be no reason to be mean to them I don’t know how addicted you are to your g1 one and how supported you are but bro you need some therapy quick.

Ok, well let me clear something up here, as there seems to be someone else posting with the name Dave.
There is a picture of a G1 beside my name so don’t get us mixed up. the Dave that posted on here the 14th is not me as you can tell but there is no avatar beside his name.
@Dave that posted on the 14th, you need help kid, seriously!. There is a G2 coming out and who knows what kind of keyboard it will have it could be soft touch only.

ok, received that lil update…
rushed home and unpacked my already-old bluetooth phone … nah, what a disapointment =|
damn… c’mon pushing files through bluetooth, a2dp and video recording is basic… we DID know that before buying G1 but it’s taking too $#@$ long to get a real update… =|

too bad thats not the G2….dats the G1..juss modified diffrently..and its for the UK…
its not a G2…its juss a fone made by HTC..with google…that runs on the Android System..
so yeahhh..if it was the G2…it would be available
to the US as well…

What?! I just got the g1 this is idiotic I wanted the cupcake update but ok I ges, I’m angry at tmobile for doing this, having ppl pay for this phone, and then making a newer version just a few months into it, but either way the g1 will always rule over the g2 bcuz I don’t think it has a slide keyboard haha I can’t text or email on an onscreen keyboard

umm..i was talking to a tmobile guy..and he tolled me that hes heard about the cupcake and the rummors about a G2..,cuz well..he too has a G1..and he said..that the “Vodafone” or the HTC Dream..which people think is the G2..is really not..its just another fone the runs on the Android OS…he said that its gonna be like the G1..But its not the G2…its more of like a “sister” phone..but not the Actual G2…so yeah…i dont think that the HTC Dream Vodafone is the new G2…just giving a heads up..so your dreams arnt crushed..by other rumors !!…well anyway.. .i tune in like..almost everyday…so leave a message if anything and ill get back to you.. for now..imma go eat my cheese fries !!…woop woop !!..lol =P

I think you guys are referring to the HTC Magic and not the HTC Dream.

The htc dream is nothing but a t-mobile g1 that’s unlocked.
The htc magic will be with vodafone in europe. Its basically a G1 but with an on-screen QWERTY keyboard instead of the slide and will already come with the cupcake update, so they day the htc magic starts selling,will be the day we can update our G1’s

This is suppose to be addressed with the new update when the Dream debuts end of this month (?), i dont know the exact date or it may be the beginning of May. But yes the phone does have the hardware for A2DP but it just needs the firmware. Im waiting to.

I’m in the UK & Android v1.5 upgrade option popped up on my G1 at 1am(GMT) on wednesday 6th
Video recording is working fine, incl sharing via email, as is onscreen keyboard & homescreen widgets
I don’t seem to have voice search, though
Also IM(GTalk) and GMail have been re-designed a bit & seem to have been improved(imho)

Cupcake is the new update suppose to be coming for Android that includes some new features like on screen keyboard, video camera, and other goodies! You just have to wait and hope you get it sooner then later! Unless your phone is ROOTED then google it and you can find how to get it for that!

Hello, can someone help me by telling me how to upload videos from my phone to the computer? I contect in via-usb cord (as was told by the t-mobile rep)but i donot see any videos on the SD card. HELP PLEASE. I really want to keep these videos and not loose them. I did the ’share’ option, but it uploaded one to u-tube, but now it’s (the phone) saying that the file is too large. (but it uploaded it already) HELP SOMEONE!

I don’t have my cable on me to try, but my method is to share it by google mail & send it to myself, then I can download it to a computer & go from there.
As to the phone saying the file is too large, if that’s in the notification bar there should(but quite possibly won’t) be a Clear notifications button when you pull it down
If that doesn’t work it could be worth shutting down your phone & then switching it back on (if you haven’t already tried this)
